But he does have one Achilles' heel. Her name is Lila, and she's his wife. In 1980, Edward tested daughter Tracy's loyalty by pretending to have a heart attack. She failed the test - miserably. Edward got to know his illegitimate son, Jimmy Lee Holt, three years later. Before he passed away, Lila's first husband revealed that his and Lila's divorce was never finalized - and therefore, Edward and Lila's marriage wasn't legal! In 1989, Edward faked his own death by taking a one-way trip to the Bermuda Triangle. Tracy brought him home two years later. When Edward learned that Tracy had teamed up with corporate raider Jax to try to overthrow ELQ, he banished his daughter from Port Charles forever. No one who knows Edward Quartermaine is surprised by the model of dysfunction that his family is. The tycoon's idea of bringing his kinfolk closer together is pitting them against one another. Miraculously, through it all, he hasn't stopped hearing the voice of reason - wife Lila's. He doesn't always (or even usually) listen to it, but at least he hears it. In 1980, Edward decided to test daughter Tracy's loyalty. Before signing a will that would disinherit her, he collapsed on the floor and pleaded with her to give him his heart medicine. She refused, unless he promised not to sign the document. At that, Edward jumped up, chuckling. Tracy had failed the test. Three years later, Edward was visited by Jimmy Lee Holt, his illegitimate son by old flame Beatrice LeSeur. When Lila's first husband, Crane Tolliver, passed away that same year, he passed along to Jimmy Lee proof that his divorce from Lila never was finalized - thus making all of the Quartermaines illegitimate! A year later, Edward married Lila again - legally this time! But in 1984, Beatrice showed up in Port Charles and threatened to expose the Quartermaines' cover-up. When she dropped dead at a charity gala, Edward was suspected of poisoning her, but he hadn't; Beatrice had merely sipped Lila's heart medication by mistake. By 1989, Edward was so fed up with Alan and Tracy's bickering that rather than put up with it for a second longer, he rewrote his will, leaving everything to Tracy's son, Ned Ashton, and went on a one-way fishing trip to the Bermuda Triangle. Even after Edward was presumed dead, Lila still spoke to his picture - and he still spoke back! Two years later, Tracy found Edward playing beach bum in the Bahamas and dragged him back to civilization. In 1993, after Tracy had endangered the family by running down her daughter-in-law, Jenny Eckert, out of jealousy over her own husband Paul Hornsby's interest in Ned's wife, Edward banished her a second time. That same year, Edward loaned grandson A.J. the money to buy into the Port Charles Hotel so that he could be assured of seeing more of the competition between A.J. and Ned that so amused him. In 1994, after Edward was accused of murdering Bradley Ward years earlier, Bradley's mother, Mary Mae Ward, revealed that Edward was Bradley's father - thus making Justus Ward Edward's grandson! In 1996, Edward became so anxious to shut down the singing career of his two-faced grandson, Ned, a.k.a. Eddie Maine, that he bought "Eddie's" record company, L&B, right out from under the noses of Ned's wife, Lois, and her business partner, Brenda Barrett. That same year, Edward had no choice but to welcome two new faces to the ELQ board meetings: mobster Sonny Corinthos, to whom grandson Jason gave his shares in the company after being brain damaged in a car accident, and Jax, an unscrupulous corporate raider. When it came to light that Tracy was in cahoots with Jax in a bid to take over ELQ, Edward reverted to form: He banished his daughter for a third time. In 1998, Edward was set on molding Carly's baby boy, Michael, into a true Quartermaine. At this time, everyone thought that Jason was Michael's father. Although Jason was estranged from the Quartermaines, Edward was still determined to bring Michael into the Quartermaine fold. When the truth came out that AJ was Michael's true father, Edward thought he could have his cake and eat it, too. This didn't turn out to be the case as Carly wasn't thrilled with the prospect of Michael becoming a true Quartermaine in every sense of the word. In 1999, Edward became very nervous when Lila hired Felicia to write her memoirs. Edward feared that a secret from the past might come to light, and he had every right to be worried. With Luke's help, Felicia discovered an extra body buried in the Quartermaine crypt on their Oyster Bay estate. After determining that the body belonged to Elliot, Lila's former fiancé, Luke and Felicia accused Edward of having murdered Elliot years earlier. Lila then explained that she had killed Elliot in self-defense and Luke and Felicia agreed to keep her secret. Edward was furious when Ned finally left ELQ to concentrate on L&B fulltime. Edward then named AJ as CEO of ELQ and thought he had everything he wanted. The rug was then pulled out from under Edward when Sonny forced AJ to sign a document granting Carly a divorce and full custody of Michael. This time, it seemed as though Edward had lost Michael for good. Edward then fired AJ from ELQ. Edward continues to meddle in the lives of his family and always insists he acts in their best interests. Although a ruthless businessman, Edward is just an old softy when it comes to Lila, the true love of his life. Edward resides in the Quartermaine Mansion at 66 Harbor View Rd. in Port Charles, New York. Edward continued to try to discredit Ned and Chloe's marriage. He even partnered up with Chloe's aunt to help him. After Chloe was the victim of a hit and run accident, Edward decided to abandon his plan, but he still wanted Ned as the CEO of ELQ. While Carly was still married to AJ, she had a one night stand with Sonny and became pregnant with his child. Edward had tried so hard to keep Carly and Michael living at the Quartermaine mansion, but he no longer could after Jason produced evidence that AJ had been responsible for burning down Sonny and Jason's warehouse. It was then used as evidence to blackmail him into signing away his parental rights to Michael over to Sonny and Carly. Edward was involved in a lot of the Quartermaine troubles. Emily was kidnapped by Zander Smith, but when she came back, she found herself in love with her kidnapper. Edward was appalled and tried to keep them apart. But the two young lovers could not be swayed. Edward came up with a plan to fake his own mugging and blame Zander. It worked until the truth came out and Emily still continued to see Zander. Skye Chandler came into the Quartermaine mansion claiming she was Alan's son from a long ago affair with Rae Cummings. Alan was stunned until he found out that all those years ago, to protect Alan, he sold the baby and told him it had died. Edward suffered from another heart attack and befriended his nurse, Melissa Bedford. After being fed up with his own family, he cut out everyone replaced them with Melissa in his will. When AJ and Courtney fell in love and moved out of the Quartermaine mansion, Edward froze AJ's accounts forcing him to get a real job. Edward then fought up against Jax using Skye as his pawn. He got her to sign a contract that said she got info on Jax's holdings in exchange for being named the sole Quartermaine heir. But Skye didn't count falling in love with Jax and when she wanted out of the bet, Edward wouldn't allow it and threatened to out their deal. At Jax and Skye's engagement party, Edward had a stroke. Worried for the future of ELQ, Lila appointed Ned as CEO of ELQ. In an attempt to set Skye up, Edward pulled his own plug. Jax and Ned framed Edward and found out the truth. Edward wanted ELQ back from Ned and he also wanted Kristina, the newest Quartermaine heir living under his roof. After learning of the one night stand between Alexis and Sonny, Edward became suspicious of Kristina's paternity and went to Sonny. As a result a paternity test was taken, but Ned was way ahead of the gang and had already switched the result to look like he was Kristina's father.Edward partnered up with Faith Roscoe briefly, but once he realized how crazy she was, he abandoned that plan. When Alexis went on trial for Alcazar's murder, Kristina went to live with Ned in the gatehouse. Edward partnered with Scott to prove that Alexis was faking her illness, to get complete custody of Kristina. He continued plotting with Alan and AJ and set fire to the gatehouse so that AJ could rescue Kristina. After a few glitches, the Quartermaines were given custody of Kristina. The honeymoon was short lived when Kristina was kidnapped. Edward assumed Alexis was the kidnapper, but it was actually AJ and Skye. Tracy came back into town with her teenage son, Dillon and broke the news to everyone that Skye was not really a Quartermaine. When the Q's needed a new butler, they hired Dobson, who was actually Alexis dressed in drag to be closer to Kristina. Edward was not happy when Dillon started dating Georgie. He even threatened to send him away to military school if he didn't shape up. Edward rallied around Emily when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. He even went as far as finally welcoming Zander into the family. AJ left town after emptying the Quartermaine bank accounts leaving the family destitute. So, when he found out that Nikolas and Emily had found a treasure that belonged to both the Cassadines and the Quartermaines, he immediately went after it. But eventually the treasure was stolen. Recently, Edward is grieving for the loss of his wife, Lila.
