Emily was shocked when she received a nude photo of herself in the mail one day with a blackmail note attached. Someone had put Emily's face on the nude body of another girl and was threatening to put the photo on the internet if Emily didn't come through with some big bucks. Emily turned to Nikolas for help and they in turn asked Lucky and Liz to help them also. Lucky and Nikolas were unlikely allies, but they both wanted to help Emily and catch her blackmailer. In the process, the friendship between Liz and Emily deepened and Lucky and Nikolas put aside their differences, for the most part. Using Nikolas' computer, Lucky and Nikolas began their search to expose the person blackmailing Emily. As it turned out, a photographer named Tom was the person blackmailing Emily. When Liz and Emily realized this, Tom held them at gunpoint and locked then in the darkroom at the photography studio. In the process, Tom also admitted that he had been the person who had raped Liz in the park. Lucky and Nikolas rescued Emily and Liz and Tom was arrested. Tom went on trial for blackmailing Emily, but couldn't be prosecuted for Liz's rape. Emily's modeling career was in better shape than ever due to all the publicity she had received. Emily was instantly smitten when Juan Santiago arrived in Port Charles. Juan was a runaway from Puerto Rico who had come to Port Charles with the mistaken belief that Sonny was his father. In time, Emily convinced Juan of the truth -- that Miguel Morez, not Sonny, was Juan's biological father. Emily and Juan were determined to see each other no matter what Alan or Monica said and Emily even his Juan in the Quartermaine mansion when Juan ran away. Eventually, Juan's father gave him permission to stay in Port Charles and Alan and Monica agreed that Emily could see Juan, under certain conditions. Emily encouraged Juan in his pursuit of a music career and helped him get a job at L&B. When Ned told Emily that L&B couldn't take Juan on as an artist, she went behind Sonny's back to get money to jumpstart Juan's career. Emily is very happy to be Juan's girlfriend and although they have come close on several occasions, Emily and Juan have not become lovers. Right now, Emily's focused on getting rid of a dead body that she woke up next to after being drugged. All of the teens are embroiled in the plot to rescue Emily from this latest mishap. Emily and Juan went through the normal trials and tribulations of teen love. They went to a rave where Emily saw Juan kissing another girl. Upset, she took a drink from a stranger and the next morning woke up next to a dead body, not remembering a thing! Luckily her friends, Elizabeth, Lucky, and Nikolas helped her hide the body in a freezer on Spoon Island. Emily started getting mysterious calls from a girl saying she saw what happened and she wanted money to keep quiet. The girl turned out to be Gia Campbell, Detective Taggert's sister. The kids got Gia to stop blackmailing Emily and it turned out that the dead body was an undercover cop. It wasn't him who drugged Emily, but a drug dealer named Zander Smith. Zander's boss, Joseph Sorel was actually responsible for killing the guy. The kids decided to put the dead body in Zander's car and then call the police. But at the rave Zander ended up kidnapping Emily and driving away with her. While Zander and Emily were on the run, the two actually ended up falling in love. When Jason showed up to rescue Emily, she talked him into letting Zander go. Back in Port Charles, Zander showed up at Emily's window. She wanted him to turn himself in to the cops, but he resisted. Lucky and Nikolas ended up finding Zander and turning him into the cops. Emily was very supportive of Zander, Juan got jealous, and they ended things for good. Alexis acted as Zander's lawyer, and in exchange for Zander's testimony against Sonny's arch enemy Sorel, Sonny posted Zander's two million dollar bail. Zander was released but was forced to protect Emily during a shootout in front of the police department. The Quartermaines were worried about Emily's safety and decided to send her away to boarding school in California to get her away from Zander. But he was not far behind her and they decided to run away together to Mexico. But ultimately they couldn't do it and got on a bus back to Port Charles. As soon as they got back, Edward had Zander arrested. Emily finally lost her virginity to Zander at the Quartermaine boathouse. They decided to leave town, but unfortunately there was a bus accident and as a result Emily was paralyzed from the waist down. Emily then left for rehab and the two lovers broke up. Emily came back to Port Charles on a break from Stanford. She seemed ok, but in fact she was harboring a secret from the people she loved, she was suffering from breast cancer. She didn't want to burden the people she cared about, so she kept it a secret for a long time. She even broke up with Zander and pretended to be in love with Nikolas but eventually her family and friends found out the truth. She refused treatment for awhile, but ultimately succumbed. She and Nikolas pretended to be in love, but in fact they were both truly falling for each other. When Emily thought she was going to die, she married Zander at the spur of the moment. But when she survived, she realized she wanted to be with Nikolas. But she could not bring herself to tell Zander the truth, and stayed with him out of guilt. Nikolas and Emily finally made love on Halloween and admitted their true feelings for each other. Unfortunately Emily was still technically married to Zander who happened to witness them together. Zander and Emily ended their short lived marriage and Nikolas and Emily finally were able to be together. Not long after, Emily's family was bankrupt after AJ took off with their money, and the Cassadine fortune was dwindling. Both families needed money. A solution to their financial problems came about when Nikolas and Emily discovered a ship at the bottom of the Port Charles harbor that held a treasure that belonged to both the Quartermaines and the Cassadines. Emily and Nikolas relived the story of Constance and her lover, pirate Blackthorn but ultimately were not able to cash in the treasure because it was stolen during the Port Charles Hotel fire. Emily and Nikolas' happy life quickly came to a stop when Nikolas got into a car accident causing him to lose his memory. Mary, a war widow living in the woods, took Nikolas in and nursed him back to health. But because Nikolas didn't have any memory of who he was, a grief stricken Mary told him he was her husband Connor, a military deserter. Everyone else believed Nikolas had died in the car crash, even though no one had found his body. Emily befriended Mary at the hospital and even started to have feelings for Nikolas' brother, Lucky. But while Nikolas and Mary and Lucky and Emily separately vacationed in the same resort, Emily finally saw that Nikolas was in fact alive. But he unfortunately did not remember Emily, he only saw her as Mary's friend from the hospital. Emily let Nikolas go without telling him the truth because she was afraid she might set him off if he did not remember the truth on his own. She appealed to Nikolas on a friendship level and proved that they had a deep connection when she and Nikolas made love. Nikolas went back to Mary, and a distraught Emily allowed herself to be kissed by Lucky who began to have romantic feelings for her. But in the end Emily could not let the lie go on any longer and finally confronted Mary with the truth. Nikolas overheard Mary and Emily talking and referring to him as Nikolas. So now Nikolas knew the truth about who he was, but he did not have his memories back. That time would soon come.
