Edward Quartermaine was so desperate to end the singing career of his businessman-grandson, Lois's husband, Ned, a.k.a. Eddie Maine, that he had bought out L&B Records, the record company Lois ran with her buddy Brenda Barrett. Lois wanted her company back, and she knew that notorious corporate player Jax was just the man to help her get it. But Jax had more on his mind than just business. He took a liking to Lois, even though she was devoted to Ned and pregnant with his child. Since Brenda was estranged from her steady, mobster Sonny Corinthos, at the time, Lois beseeched her pal to distract Jax for her. The plan worked big time: So taken with Brenda was Jax that after knowing her only a short time, he married her. At the same time, events were conspiring to part the newlyweds. When Sonny's wife, Lily Rivera, was killed by a car bomb, Brenda immediately raced to his side. But Jax had a strong hold on her and she couldn't leave him. Jax shocked his bride and, for that matter, all the Quartermaines when it was revealed that he was in cahoots with the clan's black sheep, Tracy, to take over ELQ by any means necessary. Jax explained to Brenda that business was business, but promised he'd never lie to her. The couple fell deeper and deeper in love, and to celebrate their newfound commitment, they planned a lavish second wedding. By then, Jax had made a powerful enemy of Sonny. He also had a hidden past with police commissioner Mac Scorpio. Their worlds collided on the day of the wedding, when Sonny brought in a surprise guest to stop the ceremony - Miranda, Jax's "dead" wife. No one was more surprised to see Miranda than Jax. Brenda stood by while her husband worked his way through his feelings for the woman he thought had been killed in a bombing that he ordered. Jax still loved Miranda, though not in the same way that he used to. And that love paled next to his love for Brenda. He wanted to make his new life with her work As time went by, it became increasingly difficult for Brenda to hide her lingering feelings for Sonny. When they became trapped in the catacombs beneath Port Charles, thinking that they were doomed, the former lovers gave in to their passion. Eventually, Jax parted with Brenda and almost found himself falling for V. Andinoskwi, the by-the-book female state trooper assigned to tail him! V and Jax decided to just be friends and she eventually wound up working as his assistant. Jax soon became the target of an assassination plot, but it was foiled with the help of Mac and Felicia. Brenda, however, was wounded trying to save Jax's life. Mac soon found out that the person who financed the shooting was none other than Jax's infamous older brother Jerry! Jax learned that Jerry had found out about the plot against Jax and arranged for the shooter to target Jason Morgan instead. Jax also had to battle against Brenda's rekindled love for him. After Sonny left Brenda at the altar, Jax quickly came to her aide and was her pillar of strength. Jax helped Brenda rebuild her life and Brenda soon realized that Jax was the man for her. Jax, however, wanted their relationship to remain platonic and did not want to be hurt by Brenda again. When Brenda and Jason were stranded in the mountains after the ELQ jet they were on crashed, Jax feared he would never see Brenda again. Jax realized that he was wrong for not opening his heart to Brenda. Jax and Jerry rescued Brenda and Jax then whisked Brenda to a romantic Malibu getaway. Brenda proposed to Jax and he accepted. The two were now ready to spend their lives together. Jax's world was shattered when Brenda was suddenly killed in a tragic car accident. Jax was certain that he would never love again, but that changed when he met the newly arrived Chloe Morgan, a distant cousin of Lila Quartermaine. In an effort to help Chloe maintain ownership of her design company, Jax, Ned and Alexis teamed up to thwart Chloe's Aunt Gertrude. As a result, Jax found himself married in name only to good friend Alexis while continuing to pursue his new love for Chloe. Jax and Chloe developed an enduring friendship that eventually turned to love. Once he, Alexis, and Ned had successfully thwarted Aunt Gertrude, they were able to divorce their respective spouses. Jax and Chloe's relationship deepened and they shared many romantic adventures together. However, Jax continued to be haunted by memories of his true love Brenda. When he started seeing pictures in magazines of women who looked like Brenda and receiving reports from his investigators that they had spied Brenda, Jax could no longer deny his feelings. Though he wanted to honor his commitment to Chloe, he felt that he had to find out once and for all if Brenda was alive. Pledging to return to her when he could, Jax said goodbye to Chloe and left to find Brenda. Jax returned to Port Charles without Brenda. It came to light that Stefan Cassadine had been planting the "Brenda seeds" to get Jax out of town. Stefan had kidnapped Chloe and made it look as though Helena had done it so that Chloe would grow to love and trust him. When Jax came back, Chloe and Stefan had long since "escaped" from the island and had become friends. Stefan still harbored a deep love for Chloe however and wasn't pleased by Jax's return. Chloe stunned both men when she spurned them and said that neither of them was good enough for her. She planned to return to Milan and entrench herself in clothes designing. Sadly, Chloe was killed before her plans could come to fruition. While Jax mourned her death, he was determined to see her killer punished. He believed Stefan was the culprit and set out to prove it. Jax decided to financially back Carly Corinthos in her new nightclub, The Cellar. In the meantime, he met Skye Chandler Quartermaine who had recently come to Port Charles in search of her father. When Skye and Jax started spending all of their time together, Jax realized that she was starting to develop feelings for him. He let her know that after what happened with Brenda and Chloe, he didn't think he would ever be able to fall in love again. She took this as a challenge and continuously tried to get him to help her. And when Jax saved her from drowning, she finally got what she wanted and they made love. Carly was out to get Alexis because of her romantic connection to Sonny. She tried to use the funds from the club she owned with Jax to finance a scheme to get Alexis out of town. When Jax found this out he blackmailed her to sign the club over to him and he wouldn't go to the cops. Jax then gave the club to Skye, but what he didn't know was that Skye was double crossing him with Edward to become the sole heir to the Quartermaine fortune. When Edward threatened to reveal to Jax what Skye was doing to him, he had a stroke. Ned threatened Skye and forced her to tell Jax the truth. The pressure got to Skye and she got drunk and blacked out only to wake up and find out that someone had unplugged Edward's respirator. She feared she was to blame and went into hiding. Eventually Jax rescued and forgave her. They began to make wedding plans. Unfortunately Skye's bad luck caught up with her when on her wedding night to Jax, his former love Brenda showed up very much alive. Jax postponed their honeymoon to protect Brenda from Luis Alcazar. While protecting Brenda, Jax was shot and paralyzed. Thinking he would never move again, he pushed Skye away trying to protect her. When she could not be persuaded to leave him, Jax asked Brenda to pretend they were still in love to push Skye away. Skye was suspicious of Brenda and found out that she was not dying of a mental disease like she had claimed. Jax eventually found out the truth and broke up with Skye when he found out she had kept the truth from him. Jax and Brenda fell back in love and got engaged. Brenda was then a suspect in Luis Alcazar's murder. Jax did everything he could to get her off, including confessing to the murder. They night before their wedding, Brenda reconnected with Sonny Corinthos and didn't tell Jax. But Jax found out about their kiss and let Brenda think up until the last minute that he didn't know. Jax stopped the wedding to confront Brenda, she then told him she didn't want to marry him because he had humiliated her publicly. A broken hearted Jax tried to get back to his life. He did leave town briefly, but came back on the hunt for the Dead Man's Hand cards. He wanted the cards because his sick father had the cards for most of his life and attributed his good luck to them. Someone stole the cards from him and he believed he could not without them. In an attempt to save his father's life, he went searching for the cards. That is where he met Sam McCall, also in hot pursuit of the cards. Together they found out that someone in Port Charles had them. It turned out to be AJ Quartermaine who found out that Jax and Sam knew about the cards. The pair fought their physical attraction, but soon could no longer fight it. Jax finally got a hold of the cards and went to bring them to his father. Sam stowed away in his car and challenged him to test the card's luck at a casino. The passion ignited and they made love for the first time. But Jax wanted to get to his father as soon as possible. Sam was adamant about staying so she rigged his rental car to break down. Because of this, Jax didn't get to his father on time and he died before Jax could say goodbye. When Jax found out Sam had done this, he immediately pushed her away. Tracy Quartermaine took a liking to Jax. When she took pictures of Skye Quartermaine with a dead cop's body, she went to Jax. She blackmailed him and gave him the option of either marrying her or she would go to the police with the pictures implicating Skye. Jax agreed temporarily, but not for long and broke off their engagement. Fearing that he would never find love again, Jax started a flirty friendship with Courtney Matthews. She was coming off a marriage to Jason Morgan and he was nursing a broken heart. Courtney had just started a foundation that Jax wanted to give a donation to. But he decided to do something fun.
