Joe died when Kevin was very young, but he and his brother Joey were adopted by Viki's fifth husband, Clint Buchanan and welcomed into the Buchanan family with open arms. As a teenager, Kevin began dating Stephanie Hobart, the niece of crime lord Carlo Hesser. Neither Carlo nor his parents were pleased with this union, causing the young lovers to run away. A medical emergency with Joey brought them back to Llanview, but their relationship began to get rocky as they fought more. Stephanie left town and Kevin began an affair with LeeAnn Demerest. Kevin fell in love with LeeAnn, who had eyes for Max Holden. Angry with Max for the latter's attentions to Luna Moody, LeeAnn began to spend more time with Kevin. Soon, she was pregnant. Kevin proposed and LeeAnn accepted. They were married shortly after, but their relationship was threatened when LeeAnn fell in love with Jason Webb. Refusing to cheat on Kevin, she asked him for a divorce. Kevin was furious, and made motions to get sole custody of their unborn baby. Kevin managed to gain sole custody of their newborn son, Duke, but Jason and LeeAnn kidnapped the baby and went on the run. With the help of Rachel Gannon, Kevin found his son. Kevin and LeeAnn divorced and over time were able to reach an amicable custody arrangement with Duke. Kevin started to date Rachel, who was at first very jealous of the attention LeeAnn was receiving from Kevin (albeit negative). Rachel supported Kevin when he was falsely accused of raping Marty Saybrooke and the two grew closer. Rachel befriended Dr. Ben Price, and Kevin found himself increasingly jealous over the two. Eventually his jealousy got the better of him and the two broke up. Kevin briefly dated Andy Harrison, then left for London to work as a reporter for The London Times. He returned to Llanview in 1996, taking a job at his family's newspaper, The Banner. Immediately he found himself clashing with Cassie Carpenter, reporter for rival paper The Sun. Months of clashing and trying to "out scoop" each other led to an undeniable attraction between the two. Cassie, a married mother, didn't want to act on her feelings, nor did Kevin want to disrupt a family. To avoid his feelings for Cassie, Kevin began dating lawyer Tea Delgado. Despite this, Kevin and Cassie couldn't deny their feelings for each other and eventually made love. Despite the breakup of Cassie's marriage, Cassie and Kevin publicly declared their love and eventually married. After being badly burned saving Cassie from a burning house, Kevin met Barbara Graham, his nurse. There was an attraction between the two of them, which Cassie noticed. To keep an eye on her, Cassie hired Barbara as a nurse for her father, David. When Barbara and Kevin were held hostage by Todd Manning, the two couldn't resist their attraction and made love. Cassie found out and was furious. Kevin's guilt was tremendous and he tried to make up with Cassie. Barbara tried to shoot Cassie for standing between her and Kevin, and ended up paralyzing Cassie (and killing Kevin's cousin Drew). Cassie went insane and tried to kill Barbara. She was sent to a mental institution and Kevin had the marriage annulled. Kevin began a romance with mysterious Grace Davidson, and eventually got engaged. Rae Cummings, whose husband Grace had slept with years earlier, tried to break them up by telling Kevin about Grace's actions. Although he was angry with her over her past misdeed, Kevin and Grace reconciled and prepared to marry. Soon after Grace drowned, devastating Kevin. Kevin began drinking heavily. Concerned, Joey and his wife Kelly moved in with Kevin to keep an eye on him. An attraction between Kelly and Kevin grew, and the two almost made love. Despite not wanting to hurt Joey, the two were unable to deny their feelings for each other and declared their love. Joey and Kelly divorced, and Kevin proposed to Kelly. The two moved to Texas and married. While in Texas, Kevin's political aspirations developed, leading to distance with Kelly. She had an affair, damaging their relationship. Kevin returned to Llanview in 2003 without Kelly. His political aspirations intact, he became the Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania. He began spending more time with Blair, Kelly's cousin, and developed an attraction to her. Kelly followed to Llanview in an attempt to reconcile with her husband, but Kevin pressed for a divorce. Through discussion and Kelly's announcement that she was pregnant, Kevin and Kelly reconciled. However, in a moment of weakness, Kevin slept with Blair on New Year's Eve (she wanted to get revenge on her husband Todd). Both hurt by their respective affairs, Kevin and Kelly decided to forgive each other and work things out. When Kevin was disenchanted by the corrupt politicians he was working for, he decided to return to the newspaper world. Kelly fully supported his shift in career. Both were ecstatic when Kelly gave birth to their baby son, Ace Buchanan, but unbeknownst to Kevin, she had actually experienced a miscarriage. Out of fear that Kevin would leave her without a baby, Kelly asked her brother Paul to find her a baby to pass as her own. Paul stole the baby of old flame Babe Chandler, and lied to Kelly when he told her the baby was abandoned by a homeless woman. Kevin was totally in the dark, and truly believed he was Ace's father. Kelly struggled to keep the secret of Ace's parentage which proved difficult with Paul constantly blackmailing her. A drugged Kelly and Paul had a turbulent fight in a hotel room in Atlantic City, and Kelly woke up to find Paul dead. She was convinced that she must have killed him, and called Todd for help. Todd helped Kelly bury Paul in a landfill and both conspired to keep the secret. Kevin noticed their hushed conversations and quickly grew suspicious. Kelly came clean with Kevin about Paul's apparent death, and while Kevin was upset Kelly didn't call him for help, he promised to support her. As it turned out, David Vickers was responsible for knocking Paul out, and panicked when he thought he'd killed Paul. But Paul had survived the fight with David, and turned up alive. Furious that his own sister left him for dead and desperate for money, he left notes for Kevin that said Ace wasn't his child. Terrified Kevin would find out the truth and that she would lose Ace, Kelly lied to Kevin and said Todd Manning was Ace's real father. Kevin was enraged and promised to file for divorce. Todd went to Kevin and told him neither Kelly nor Todd was Ace's parents. Todd revealed that Kelly had a miscarriage and Paul was responsible for getting Kelly another baby. A heartbroken Kevin confronted Paul, who admitted Todd was telling the truth. However, Paul kept up the lie that the baby was abandoned by a homeless woman, and not stolen. Kevin blamed Kelly for deceiving him, and was saddened she was unable to tell him their baby had died. Kevin's sadness quickly turned into anger and he vowed to get custody of Ace. A bitter custody battle ensued, and all were stunned when the judge ended up rewarding Kevin full custody of Ace. Kevin and Kelly also divorced. When Kelly and Kevin learned that Ace was actually stolen from his biological mother, she was determined to return him to his rightful parents. Kevin strongly disagreed. When Paul turned up dead, Kelly had no way of finding the identity of Ace's mother. Kevin realized he was interested in getting back into politics and was elected Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania. His happiness was cut short when Ace was kidnapped during his victory party. Kevin put all his energies into finding his son. Kelly left town to search for Ace, and when she quietly returned weeks later without him, Kevin assumed she found the baby and gave him to his biological mother. JR Chandler came to Llanview and claimed Ace was his biological son. Further, he said that Ace was kidnapped by Babe, the child's biological mother. Kevin and his grandfather Asa were determined to fight the Chandlers for custody of Ace. When Ace was found, Kevin was awarded temporary custody as his legal guardian, pending a custody battle. Despite the disapproval of both Kelly and Duke, who believed Ace belonged with his biological mother, Kevin planned to fight for permanent custody of Ace. At the custody hearing, Kelly convinced Kevin that Ace belonged with Babe, and that he needed to accept and mourn their lost child. Moved by Kelly's words, Kevin gave up his claim to Ace and advocated Babe as the custodial parent. Despite his decision to relinquish his rights to Ace, Kevin was left devastated by the loss. He decided to leave Llanview, and stumbled upon Todd on his way out of town. Todd had been missing for months and Kevin discovered he'd been held captive by lunatic Margaret Cochran. Todd admitted to Kevin that he had to sleep with Margaret in order keep her from hurting his family. Kevin agreed to keep Todd's secret, especially after seeing how much the truth could hurt the emotionally unstable Blair. Kevin and Kelly made headway in their fragile relationship after finally dealing with Kelly's miscarriage. Kelly brought Kevin to the site of their son's grave and both were able to forgive each other's past mistakes. Soon after, Kevin offered Kelly a fundraising job at Buchanan Enterprises, and the close proximity has reignited old feelings. However, their trust remained on shaky ground, especially after Kevin presumed Kelly had tricked him into exposing to Blair that Todd was raped by Margaret. The misunderstanding was cleared up, and the pair continues to make a tentative reconciliation. Recently, Kelly has been spending time with Spencer Truman, a mysterious new doctor in town. Kevin's jealousy over their friendship has made him realize that he wants to win Kelly back for good.
