Her step-father, Mac Scorpio has been her primary father figure over the years. The most significant part of her childhood was when she and her cousin BJ's school bus got into an accident and BJ died. Maxie needed a new heart which ended up being her own cousin's. When Mac and Felicia got married, he treated Maxie and Georgie like they were his own children. But when Felicia took off on the run with Luke Spencer, Mac took the girls to live in Texas with their grandmother. Eventually, they came back to Port Charles. Georgie and Maxie were the pawns in a custody trial between Mac and Felicia, and in the end Mac dropped the suit. Maxie's first crush was on Lucky Spencer, but he didn't return her feelings and she was crushed. To get close to Lucky, she asked him to be her tutor. She even went as far as getting birth control pills and sneaked into Lucky's room. He gently told her he only thought of her as a friend. While Maxie babysat for Lulu, a fire broke out in the attic where she was playing while Maxie was outside on the phone. Maxie and Georgie were then sent away to Texas again. When they got back, they were kidnapped by Luis Alcazar, but were safely returned to Felicia and Mac. Felicia left town again to care for her ailing grandmother. Maxie soon found a new boy to like, troublemaker Kyle. She wanted him to like her, so she went to a party with him where they ended up almost having sex. But when Maxie backed out, Kyle lied and told everyone they slept together. Eventually the two made up and Maxie agreed to lose her virginity to him. What she didn't know was that Kyle set up a web cam to record the whole event for everyone at school to watch on the internet. Afterwards Kyle was regretful of hurting Maxie and asked her to the prom. Mac didn't let her go and she ended up going with Dillon. When she found out that Georgie was planning on sleeping with Lucas after the dance, she lured him into a kiss for Georgie to walk in on. Maxie and Georgie took jobs as candy stripers at the hospital as an after school job. Kyle persuaded her to steal pills from the hospital and ultimately she got caught. Maxie befriended Zander, who she helped while he is on the run from the police. Although it never turned romantic, Maxie came to care deeply about Zander and was devastated when he was presumed dead after the Port Charles fire. Felicia finally came back to town when Mac almost died in the Port Charles fire. At this time, Maxie decided to get her life on track and leave Port Charles for boarding school. When Maxie returned to she inadvertently caused trouble in the relationship of Georgie's friends Diego and Brooke Lynn, when Diego began paying extra attention to her. Georgie was convinced that Maxie was trying to break up her friends, and reprimanded Maxie for flirting with Diego. During their fight, Maxie collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. It turned out Maxie was having problems with the heart transplant she had as a child, and would die without another transplant. Maxie refused to have a new transplant in an effort to hold on to BJ's heart. The unthinkable happened when Georgie suffered a near fatal fall, and doctors explained that she could provide Maxie with a new heart. Mac and Felicia were devastated by the possibility of losing one of their daughters. Luckily, both Maxie and Georgie recovered, giving them both a new lease on life. During her stay at the hospital, Maxie met Jesse Beaudry. Jesse was an undercover cop apparently being framed for a the shooting of DA John Durant. He used Maxie's room as a place to hide out and the two forged a friendship. Maxie was determined to protect Jesse and insisted on going on the run with him. Recently, Jesse and Maxie staked out a cabin in hopes of catching the dirty cop framing Jesse. Will the two get even closer, or will Jesse put Maxie's life in danger?
