His mother Carly, lied about his paternity and claimed that his biological uncle Jason was his real father. Jason went along with the story, to prevent his brother AJ from learning the truth--that AJ in fact was Michael's father. Michael was born via emergency c-section after his mother collapsed and began to hemorrhage. Jason named Michael after his friend and local mob boss Michael "Sonny" Corinthos. Shortly after his birth, doctors discovered Michael had a heart condition that required immediate surgery. With Carly still in grave danger, Jason was forced to make the life-saving decision to allow Michael to have the surgery. Jason became a permanent fixture in baby Michael's life after post-partum Carly left Port Charles. Upon Carly's return, the Quartermaine family began to work her for access to their newest heir. At just three months old, Michael was kidnapped by Tony Jones and later rescued by Jason. Michael's paternity was eventually revealed to AJ by Robin Scorpio, Jason's girlfriend. This revelation led to a bitter custody battle between Jason and the Quartermaines. Although awarded joint custody, Jason chose to give up his rights so that his dangerous lifestyle would not harm Michael. The war over Michael came to a head when Sonny learned that Carly was pregnant with his child. Sonny blackmailed AJ into signing over his parental rights to Michael so that Sonny and Carly could raise their children as a family. Over the years, Sonny and Carly would divorce and remarry numerous times. Throughout, Michael would come up with various schemes to reunite his parents-which often worked. Michael became a big brother with the birth of baby Morgan. Morgan is the son of Carly and Sonny. Michael would later learn that he also had a sister named Kristina from a tryst between Sonny and Alexis Davis. Michael enjoyed being a big brother, but his happy family would soon be shattered. Michael, Morgan and Kristina were kidnapped from their homes by Faith Roscoe. Michael put up quite a fight and managed to escape only to later return, because he could not bear leaving his brother and sister behind. Michael stole a cell phone off one of Faith's goons and called Sonny. During the call a gunshot went off, leaving Sonny and Carly fearing the worst. Jason, Sam, Carly, Sonny and FBI Agent Reese Marshall followed Faith's trail to Louisiana. After an intense gun battle in a church, Faith was taken into custody but the children were nowhere to be found. Morgan and Kristina were recovered at a nearby airport, but there was no trace of Michael. Jason later finds a picture of seemingly dead Michael on a sniper that was hired to kill Faith Roscoe. Sonny and Carly were inconsolable upon learning that Michael may be dead. Jason refused to give up and continued to search for Michael. Michael turns up alive on a private jet, only to have it crash off the coast of Georgia. When Michael comes to, he saves a trapped passenger from the plane. When he flips the passenger over, he discovers it is AJ. AJ begins to mess with Michael's mind and tells him that Sonny and Carly don't want him anymore. While stranded, Michael is bit by a scorpion and becomes seriously ill. AJ calls his pilot and has them "rescued." AJ and Michael turn up in the Bahamas where the mind games continue. Back in Port Charles, Jason fails to give up and tracks Faith's bank records to the Bahamas. Jason and Sam fly down to the Bahamas and discover recent pictures of Michael and AJ together. AJ flees back to Port Charles with Michael and they hide in the Quartermaine attic. Carly learns that Michael is alive, when she sees him in the park. Sonny, Carly and Jason go to the Quartermaines to retrieve Michael but he runs away. Sonny and Carly find him in the boathouse, but realize AJ has been messing with his mind. AJ and Jason get in a fight on the Quartermaine landing and plunge down to the foyer. At the hospital, Sonny and Carly try to reconnect with withdrawn Michael to no avail. However, Reese manages to connect and comfort him. AJ Quartermaine was murdered and everyone became a suspect. Michael retreated into his shell even more. It got worse when Michael witnessed his mother getting arrested. Reese continued to help Michael and got him to talk about everything that happened with AJ. Michael started to have nightmares about the murder. Michael told Reese he saw his mother kill AJ. Michael tried to run away but Jason found him near the estate gates. Michael broke down and told him about his nightmare as well. Michael's nightmares continued and he dreamed that he was the one that really killed AJ. Michael ran away from home after overhearing his mother say he did kill AJ. Jason found Michael at the Quartermaine's estate where Alan was defending AJ. Michael confessed to Jason that he killed AJ. Jason took Michael to see Sonny at the police department and told Sonny that he was the one that killed AJ. Sonny explained to Michael that the adults needed to make things right. Upset Michael left with Jason and Carly but made it clear he wouldn't leave the country or Sonny. During Sonny's murder trial, Michael snuck away from Bobbie and Mike and showed up at the courthouse. He yelled at the judge that his parents didn't kill AJ. Durant convinced the court to hear his grandson out. Durant tried to get dirt on Sonny but Ric got Michael off the stand. When Sonny was found not guilty, everyone was overjoyed. Michael continued to have nightmares. Jason and Sam looked into starting therapy for Michael. Sam met with Dr. Thomas, a local psychiatrist, and thought he would be the right fit for Michael. She was surprised to learn that he was also Jason's doctor after his accident. Michael began his therapy sessions but didn't like it. Emily was able to convince him to give it another try. When Michael went back for another session, he met Jodie. Jodie and Michael became quick friends. Jodie advised Michael on how to get out of therapy sessions, but his family really wanted him to try again. Michael had to deal with the fact that his parents were not only splitting up but dating new people. When Carly told him she's going to marry Alcazar, Michael threw a huge fit. When Carly and Alcazar returned from their elopement, Michael was furious. He wanted to stay with Sonny. Carly had Michael over to her new home and tried to show him his new bedroom. Michael again exploded and blamed her for her failed marriage with Sonny. When Jason was accused of shooting Durant (and subsequently Alan accused Jason of killing AJ), Michael tried to tell everyone the truth. But Jason stopped him. Jason explained to Michael that no one could ever know that he killed AJ. Michael saw Jodie overheard all of this. Jodie promised to keep Michael's secret. Michael and Jodie continued to hang out, and even shared a kiss on the cheek. When Michael met Jodie's mom, she told Michael to leave her daughter alone. Michael saw Reese and Sonny together and got very upset. He smashed a picture frame and cut his hand in the process. Sam rushed over to help him and took him to see Dr. Thomas. When Jason heard about Michael's accident, he interrupted the therapy session and took Michael home. Sonny talked to Michael about the picture. Sonny wasn't mad at Michael for what he did and would always love him no matter what. Sonny told Michael he thought he should go back to Dr. Thomas. Michael had another run-in with Jodie's mom. She made it very clear to Michael that he was to leave Jodie alone. After a troubling session with Dr. Thomas, Michael talked to Jason about Jodie. He wanted Jason to go talk to Jodie's parents and make it okay for them to play together again. Jason was more than happy to do this for Michael. Jason returned with some bad news… it looked like Jodie had moved away. A hurricane has hit Port Charles. Jason and Sam are taking care of the kids at Sonny's house when Dr. Thomas stops by. Michael eavesdrops as Dr. Thomas explains he found a note from Jodie in Michael's backpack. Dr. Thomas has never treated Jodie. Michael goes to his room and finds Jodie there. He wonders why she lied about being one of Dr. Thomas' patients.
