Michael McBain
Mother: Eve McBain Father: Thomas McBain (deceased) Sibling: John McBain Cousin: Shannon McBain Significant Romantic Relationships: Marcie Walsh Michael McBain grew up in Atlantic City. His father died at an early age, leaving Michael to be raised by his mother Eve and his older brother John. Angry and disillusioned, Michael left home to attend boarding school on a scholarship. College followed and then medical school. Along the way, Michael grew hardened and bitter, eventually losing his soul. He came to Llanview and started interning at Llanview Hospital. When Al Holden died, his love for Marcie Walsh was so strong that it brought his spirit back to earth. Desperate to be near Marcie, Al's spirit inhabited Michael's soulless body, taking control. There, Al/Michael attempted to woo Marcie so that she would fall in love with Al/Michael. It began to work, and on Valentine's Day, Marcie realized that Al's spirit inhabited Michael's body. Reunited, Al told Marcie that his spirit had to return to heaven, but his soul would always reside in Michael. After a final kiss, Al left for heaven, and Michael (now in control after Al's spirit had left) and Marcie had no recollection of his ever being there. However, both did remember their courtship of the last few months and embarked on a new relationship. Michael and Marcie continued to fall deeper in love, while they both struggled with their busy schedules. Michael started noticing strange behavior by Chief of Staff Dr. Long, and began investigating him. Michael broke into Dr. Long's office to do some snooping, and then fell out of a window to avoid getting caught. He was confined to the hospital with a broken leg, but continued to spy on Dr. Long with the view he had of his office window. Marcie initially disapproved of Michael's involvement, but later agreed to do some investigating herself. Marcie discovered that Dr. Long was selling organs on the black market, and shared this information with Michael. Dr. Long confronted Marcie, and locked her in an abandoned freezer used for storing blood. Michael tried to find her and confronted Dr. Long on the hospital roof. When Marcie escaped the storage room, she interrupted their fight. Dr. Long nearly pushed her off the roof, but Michael came to her rescue and Long was arrested. Marcie, an aspiring author, finished her own mystery novel, The Killing Club, and allowed Michael to read the first draft. Marcie's insecurities came to the surface with Michael's constructive criticism, but he was able to convince her that the book had great potential and encouraged her to send it to a publisher. The couple faced yet another conflict when Marcie's gay brother Eric announced his plans to marry his longtime partner. Michael had a hard time accepting the notion of gay marriage and Marcie was deeply disappointed. Despite their differences of opinion, Michael supported Marcie in all her endeavors. Michael was proud to hear that Marcie's novel was being published, and introduced her to a literary agent named Hayes Barber. Shortly after hiring Hayes, Marcie became immersed in the preparations for her book, and had less time to spend with Michael. Michael was also preoccupied with his medical career, and decided to hold off on proposing marriage to Marcie until both had more time for each other. Marcie was privately hurt by Michael's decision, and the pair continued to drift apart due to their chaotic schedules. Both decided it would be best to end their relationship, and have since tried to remain friends. Michael became concerned when he learned Marcie was encouraged by Hayes to lose weight and consider liposuction. Michael tried to explain to Marcie that she did not need to change her image or get plastic surgery to be a success. Michael's own career was in jeopardy after his patient Tico Santi died when his life support was mysteriously unplugged. Michael was placed on probation, and later suspended when evidence pointed to him as the culprit. Marcie supported Michael, the feelings between them still strong. When Cristian Vega confessed to killing Tico, Michael was cleared of all suspicion. Michael and Marcie slowly started to reconnect, but the continued pressure put on Marcie by Hayes proved an obstacle. Michael's co-workers threw him a party to congratulate him on the end of his suspension. Thanks to Hayes's manipulations, Marcie was prepared to miss it, but at the last minute decided she wanted to spend time with Michael. Marcie arrived at the party just as a co-worker of Michael's admitted her crush on him and kissed him. Michael pulled away, but Marcie had witnessed everything and ran out into the street, where she was hit by a car. Michael fervently worked to save her life and thanks to him, Marcie recovered. Michael helped Marcie get an early release from the hospital to attend the publishing party for The Killing Club. A grateful Marcie kissed Michael. Despite this, they realized that there were still many unresolved issues between them, and they held off on getting back together. When two of Marcie's close friends from her Love House days were killed, she confided in Michael that their deaths were strikingly similar to two of the murders she'd written in her book. Michael and Marcie took their suspicions to John, and he concluded they had a copy cat killer on their hands. Marcie was horrified, and felt wholly responsible for the death of her close friends. Michael was there to support Marcie, and assure her that she was not in any way to blame. Hayes was thrilled by the turn of events and felt the publicity would help sell books. Recently, Michael has developed an unlikely friendship with Natalie Vega, who's determined to gain the affections of Michael's brother. Michael has tried to convince Natalie to leave John alone to no avail. Meanwhile, Michael remains supportive of Marcie and the continued investigation into The Killing Club murders. He also continues his work at Llanview hospital and was thrilled when the renowned Dr. Spencer Truman joined their team.
