In 1976, Monica was stunned when her true love - and husband Dr. Jeff Webber's brother - Dr. Rick Webber turned out to be alive. Despite her love for Rick, Monica married Dr. Alan Quartermaine in 1978. A year later, Monica gave birth to Alan Jr., whom Alan suspected was Rick's son (but wasn't). In 1982, Monica allowed Alan to take in his illegitimate son by the late Susan Moore, Jason. Without realizing their relation, Monica slept with her nephew, Ned Ashton, in 1988. The following year, Monica was reunited with her long-lost daughter, Dawn Winthrop, who promptly became involved with Ned. In 1994, Monica underwent a mastectomy and afterwards, rebuffed Alan's advances. Monica and Alan took in her friend and fellow cancer patient Page Bowen's daughter, Emily, when she died in 1995. Feeling unattractive, Monica succumbed to the charms of younger man Pierce Dorman in 1996, then was suspected of murdering him in 1997. The fact that the former Monica Bard never has wanted for attention is not by accident, it's by design. Raised in a foundling home, the formidable doctor has suffered for most of her life from an innate fear of being alone. Since she met and married her soulmate, Dr. Alan Quartermaine, she's had a number of lovers, some of whom she's lived with. But none of them have been like Alan: someone she couldn't live without. In 1976, Monica was in the middle of a traumatic love triangle. She was married to Dr. Jeff Webber but desperately in love with his late brother, fellow M.D. Rick. When it turned out that Rick was alive, Monica wanted nothing more than to be with him. But extricating herself from her marriage to Jeff was no mean feat. As Monica became increasingly jealous of Rick's relationship with Dr. Lesley Faulkner, Jeff grew ever more unstable, and even shot himself. Finally, in 1977, Monica obtained a divorce from Jeff after Rick proposed to Lesley. A year later, Monica was distracted by a new arrival in Port Charles, wealthy Dr. Alan Quartermaine - so much so that she married him. In 1979, Monica resumed her affair with Rick but only briefly. She became pregnant and stayed with Alan; Rick remained married to Lesley. Monica and Rick became the targets of a foiled murder plot by Alan in 1980, when the mad doctor learned that his son, Alan Jr., was really Rick's. Monica obtained the ammunition that she needed to divorce Alan in 1981, when his mistress, Susan Moore, gave birth to his son, Jason. A loophole in Alan's gift of his family's home to Monica prevented her from kicking him out, though, so she sectioned off the Quartermaine mansion into "his" and "hers" wings. She wouldn't allow Jason, whose mother was murdered, in either of them until it dawned on her that if the Q's didn't take in the boy, his guardian would be nutcase Heather Webber, his mother's cousin. In 1986, Monica teamed up with Sean Donely, bankrupted the Quartermaines and finally evicted them. After Alan faked his own murder in an attempt to frame Sean and got amnesia, Monica fell in love with him all over again. Two years later, Monica and Alan were at odds over the assistant chief of staff position at General Hospital. When Alan blew her big chance, she visited Green Meadows spa and slept with the tennis pro, Ward, who turned out to be Ned Ashton, the son of Alan's sister, Tracy. In 1989, Monica was reunited with her long-lost daughter, Dawn Winthrop, who left Ned at the altar upon learning of his fling with her mother. Alan and Monica were beside themselves with worry when Emily was kidnapped by a drug dealer named Zander. As it turned out, Zander was just another one of Sorel's victims and Emily wasn't in any real danger from him. In fact, Emily saw Zander's true colors and they formed a deep bond. Alan and Monica were greatly relieved when Jason brought Emily home safe and sound. Alan and Monica were then stunned when Emily defended Zander and made it clear to her family that she would anything she could to help him. Alan and Monica feared for Emily's safety after Sonny was shot when Sorel's men made an attempted hit on Zander. Emily still refused to stop seeing Zander and thinking they had no other choice, Alan and Monica sent Emily away to boarding school. Emily quickly ran away from school with Zander by her side, but they soon returned to Port Charles. Alan and Monica are still determined to keep Emily safe and were dealt another blow when Emily announced that she was moving out of the mansion and into Kelly's. Monica was not happy when Alan's old flame, Rae Cummings showed up and claimed that Alan was the long lost father of her daughter, Skye Chandler. Monica was not able to hide her disdain for not only Rae, but for Skye. She felt they were both gold diggers. But Monica soon faced a horrible road ahead of her when she found out her daughter Emily had been diagnosed with breast cancer. This brought up her own memories of battling the same disease and supported Emily as much as she could. Luckily Emily made it through and is now in remission. Monica was less than thrilled when another relative of Alan's showed up in Port Charles. This time it was his sister Tracy with her teenaged son, Dillon. But Tracy did come with some interesting news that Rae Cummings had lied about Skye being Alan's son. Monica was happy, but things didn't really change because Alan still continued to treat Skye as his own daughter. Monica and Alan were surprised to find out that AJ had drained the Quartermaine accounts and had taken off with the money. So, the Q's were happy when Emily along with her fiancé Nikolas found out there was a sunken ship in the Port Charles Harbor that contained a treasure. But since the Cassadine ship was sitting on top of the Quartermaine sunken ship, Helena insisted that the money belonged to her family. Alan and Monica agreed to split the treasure for Emily's sake, but Tracy had her own plans to steal the treasure. Recently, Monica was devastated by the death of her mother-in-law, Lila Quartermaine.
