Years ago, RJ was tried for armed robbery and aggravated assault. Nora, Hank's wife at the time, defended RJ, who was ultimately found guilty and spent nine years in prison. RJ's anger over his conviction led to a longstanding grudge against Nora, but especially Hank. RJ arrived in Llanview in 1994 where he collected a loan he had extended to big gambler Max Holden. Determined to exact revenge on his brother, RJ released a tampered videotape from Hank's college days which showed Hank standing silently by as a man was killed! RJ blackmailed Hank for $10,000, but then decided to take things a step further by trying to seduce Hank's fiancee Sheila. Sheila nearly gave herself to RJ to save Hank, but RJ stopped her at the last minute, satisfied with how far she'd be willing to go. Eventually Bo Buchanan found the real videotape of the murder, which exonerated Hank. Determined to get back at his brother, RJ revealed at Hank and Sheila's wedding that RJ had slept with Nora when she was married to Hank! RJ showed a softer side with his commitment to his niece, Rachel, when he helped in an intervention for her drug use. RJ bought a nightclub and named it Club Indigo and was quickly arrested for having an illegal liquor license. Alex Olanov bailed RJ out, and the two teamed up in many shady business ventures. RJ also formed an alliance with underworld leader Carlo Hesser, and was one of many suspects when Carlo was later killed. RJ framed Antonio Vega for the murder, but both RJ and Antonio were eventually cleared. RJ met Jacara Principal, who agreed to become his partner in Club Indigo. The two began a romance and fell in love. However, Jacara made it very clear to RJ that she did not accept any sort of criminal behavior. Max was able to lure away Jacara as a business partner, infuriating RJ. Determined for revenge, RJ set in motion a plot against Max. However, things got out of hand and RJ's associates double crossed him, resulting in the kidnapping of Max's son and daughter. Max and Bo suspected RJ, who desperately tried to cover his tracks. When Max confronted him at gunpoint, RJ revealed his role in the kidnapping. He aided Max in finding his children and got shot in the process of taking them back to Llanview. RJ was given community service for his crimes, but Jacara, disgusted with his actions, left him. In a strange turn of events, Max and RJ ended up becoming partners in Club Indigo. Financial troubles plagued Club Indigo and RJ was bankrupt. After accidentally starting a fire, he let the club burn to collect the insurance money. He also helped his friend Dorian Lord cover her hit and run of Jessica Buchanan. RJ began dating lawyer Tea Delgado. RJ was happy with Tea, until her ex-husband Todd came to town. Jealous of RJ and Tea's relationship, Todd attempted to kill RJ before convincing Tea to run away with him. When Todd returned to town a few months later without Tea, RJ sought revenge by kidnapping Todd. Todd was rescued and RJ managed to avoid imprisonment. RJ also tampered with Todd's brakes, causing Cristian Vega to get into an accident that injured his hand, and prevented him from ever painting again. RJ gave Lindsay Rappaport a drug that erased people's memories, unaware that Lindsay used it on Nora. RJ opened a new club, "Break Bar" where Cristian worked as a bartender. RJ began a side business of hijacking trucks and selling the cargo. Cristian was working undercover to bust RJ. When RJ found out, he sent a criminal, Keith, to "convince" Cristian to leave town. RJ made it clear he did not want Cristian killed, but Keith had his own agenda and attempted to kill Cristian. Eventually Keith was caught and RJ managed to escape imprisonment. RJ met Keri Reynolds and was drawn to her immediately. He was shocked to learn that Keri was his daughter from a long ago relationship with Liz Reynolds. RJ was not happy when Keri started dating Antonio, whom RJ despised. Keri often found herself caught between Antonio and RJ. Lindsay blackmailed RJ into helping her escape from prison by threatening to reveal that he gave her a memory erasing drug. RJ was forced to comply. To provide himself with an alibi, he drugged a flu-ridden Keri and then helped Lindsay escape. Upon waking up, Keri assumed that RJ had been by her side the whole time and thus provided him with an alibi when Antonio began investigating RJ's possible role in the escape. RJ was pleased when this divided Keri and Antonio. When Liz arrived in Llanview, RJ was surprised and excited to see her. He hoped to romantically reconnect with Liz, but was not pleased when he found out she slept with Antonio and was pregnant with his child. RJ threatened to tell Keri, but Antonio decided that he must be the one to tell Keri the truth. RJ, along with the rest of Llanview, was shocked when Keri discovered that the baby she had been carrying-as a surrogate for her mother---was actually her own baby, fathered by Antonio! Protective of his daughter and granddaughter, RJ encouraged them to get away from Antonio. Soon, the news of Keri, Liz and baby Jamie's death in a plane crash broke. Keri and Jamie survived the crash, however, and were secretly living in Canada. RJ maintained contact with them, but Keri returned to Llanview to reconcile with Antonio. When Antonio told Keri that they had no future together, but he would always be a father to Jamie, Keri went ballistic. She schemed with RJ to destroy Antonio, making it appear as if Antonio was abusing her. Eventually, Keri killed herself. RJ came upon her suicide note and pocketed it, to make it appear as though Antonio had murdered her. Jessica figured out the truth, and Antonio was freed. Despite their mutual animosity, RJ and Antonio agreed that RJ needed to be part of his granddaughter's life. RJ began dating lawyer Evangeline Williamson. Her strong belief in the law sometimes clashed with his way of doing business, but RJ developed feelings for her. When Evangeline began spending time with John McBain, RJ was not happy. He had the two followed and a furious Evangeline broke up with him. In retaliation, RJ had John beat up. RJ hired Rex Balsom and Paul Cramer to heist a truck full of valuable paintings for him. Thanks to Natalie Buchanan, the job was botched and RJ demanded that Paul and Rex compensate him for their failure. Rex managed to help settle his debt when he discovered that RJ was responsible for the trashing of the construction site for the new community center. In an effort to decrease the property value so he could buy it, RJ had vandalized the property. In exchange for Rex's silence, RJ returned the club Ultraviolet to Rex's ownership. When Antonio discovered that he was really a member of the Santi crime family, he let Jamie stay with RJ full time in order to protect her. Antonio reconciled his past, but RJ refused to give the child back. He told Antonio he was determined to sue him for full custody of Jamie and raise her on his own. A bitter custody battle ensued, and RJ pulled all the stops to hold onto custody of Jamie. RJ was ecstatic when the judge awarded him custody of Jamie, with plans to revisit the case in the next six months. RJ has also embarked on a romance with longtime friend Lindsay Rappaport, and has supported her through the recent death of her daughter Jen.
