The eldest daughter of domineering publishing tycoon Victor Lord, Viki suffered from Victor's controlling nature both emotionally and physically. A victim of molestation, Viki blocked out her father's sexual abuse at an early age, which led to her development of Dissociative Identity Disorder. At six years old, Viki witnessed a fight between her father and mother in which her mother fell down the stairs. Viki (incorrectly) assumed that Victor had pushed Eugenia, and grew to fear the man even more. In high school, Viki entered into a romance with Roger Gordon. The two made love, but Roger was (seemingly) killed by an explosion. Traumatized, Viki reverted to an alternate personality, Niki Smith, and soon discovered she was pregnant with Roger's child. Carrying the baby to term, Viki took over from Niki in childbirth, but Victor had Viki hypnotized to forget everything. Victor paid the very much alive Roger to take baby Megan and raise her. Viki went away to college and returned to Llanview upon graduation. She began to work at her father's paper, The Banner, and immediately clashed with working class reporter Joe Riley. Soon, feelings developed between the two which Victor tried to squelch, not believing Joe was son-in-law material. Stressed by the tug of war between Joe and her father, Niki began to emerge at night and cruise the local bars. Niki developed a flirtation with Vinnie Wolek, Joe's best friend (who had never met Viki). Vinnie was soon in love with Niki. Niki wanted to be fully in control of her body, and sought to ruin all of Viki's relationships with her family and friends. Niki even shot Victor in the arm. The truth of Viki's split personality came out, and Viki began the slow process of recovery. She and Joe planned to marry, but during the ceremony Niki took control and ran off with Vinnie. Knowing that Niki was an alter personality for Viki did not stop Vinnie from running away with her. When Viki finally emerged, she was ashamed of her behavior and pulled away from Joe. Viki grew closer to Vinnie, but eventually true love won out and she married Joe. After investigating a drug cartel, Joe was presumed dead. A depressed Viki mourned Joe, but slowly found herself falling in love with newspaperman Steve Burke. Steve pursued Viki ardently, much to Vinnie Wolek's chagrin. Still in love with Viki, Vinnie did not want Steve to have her-so he filled Viki's head with doubt over whether Joe was truly dead or not. Marcy Wade, a fellow worker at The Banner, wanted Steve for herself so she plotted to make Viki believe that Niki Smith had returned. Marcy began gas lighting Viki, which began to push the already anguished Viki (who had to decide whether to declare Joe legally dead) over the edge. Preparing to issue the final blow, Marcy decided to kill Vinnie and frame Niki. Dressed up as Niki, Marcy was shocked when Steve confronted her instead of Vinnie. Having discovered her scheme, Steve struggled with the armed Marcy. The gun went off and Marcy was killed. Steve was charged with murder. Joe Riley, very much alive, slipped back into town. Having just recovered from amnesia, Joe was shocked to see Viki with Steve. Joe found Marcy Wade's purse, which had documents that revealed her schemes and thus could exonerate Steve. Joe, not wanting to disrupt what he saw as Viki's new life, anonymously sent in Marcy's purse. Steve was exonerated, Viki declared Joe legally dead and Steve and Viki were soon after married. Joe, suffering from a brain aneurysm, was rushed to Llanview Hospital. Joe's friend Wanda Webb realized Joe's true identity. After much debate, the doctors contacted Viki shortly after she returned from her honeymoon. Shocked that Joe was alive, Viki was reunited with him at the hospital. Joe lived through life saving surgery, leaving Viki torn over which man she should be with-Joe or Steve? Feeling duty bound to Steve, Viki told Joe that she was committed to her husband. The attraction between Joe and Viki was powerful, and after months of longing, the two made love after being stranded in a mountain cabin together. Ridden with guilt, Viki told Joe there could be nothing between them and got into a car accident. Comatose, Viki woke months later with selective amnesia-she couldn't remember anything past her marriage to Steve (i.e. Joe's return). Wanting to spare Viki psychological trauma, the truth about Joe's return was kept from her. A depressed Joe grew close with Cathy Craig, who began to develop unrequited feelings for him. Viki's memory eventually returned, but still ridden with guilt, she told Joe she would stay with Steve. After her sister Meredith was killed, Viki realized how precious and short life was. Not wanting to deny her true love for Joe any longer, Viki decided to end her marriage and reunite with Joe. Joe was blissful when Viki admitted her true feelings, while Steve initially refused to grant Viki a divorce. Eventually he realized it was unfair to both of them to remain in the marriage. As Viki and Joe prepared to marry, Cathy Craig announced she was pregnant with Joe's child after a one night stand while Viki and Joe were separated. Joe was prepared to marry Cathy to give their baby a name, but Cathy-despite her true feelings for Joe-didn't want him obligated into a marriage. Viki and Joe married again while Viki longed for a baby of her own. A lifelong feud was born when Viki met Dr. Dorian Cramer, who was up in front of the Llanview Hospital board after a patient died under her care. Viki was one of the five members of the board who were deciding Dorian's fate. Dorian had always resented the wealthy Lords, especially Viki's sister Meredith, and thus was convinced Viki would vote against her. Viki, in fact, was the only board member to vote in Dorian's favor, but the manner in which the votes were revealed didn't express that. Convinced Viki had a hand in ousting her as a physician, Dorian swore revenge. She quickly ensconced herself at the Lord mansion, Llanfair, by become the ailing Victor Lord's private nurse. As Viki tried to get pregnant, Joe and Cathy's daughter Megan began to grow ill. Dr. Larry Wolek diagnosed her with congenital heart disease passed on from Joe and confided this in Viki. Realizing that if she were to get pregnant her baby could suffer the same fate, Viki was torn whether to devastate Joe with the news. Before Viki could gather the courage to tell Joe the news, baby Megan died. The bad news continued when Dorian and Victor eloped, making Dorian Viki's stepmother. As Viki and Dorian's animosity continued, Viki struggled with how to tell Joe the news of Megan's heart defect that he passed along. Soon Viki found herself pregnant, and shared the news with an elated Joe-not getting the opportunity to explain about the possibility of their baby also having a heart condition. After learning of some of Dorian's various schemes, Victor suffered a massive stroke. Desperate to keep his children away from him (for fear Victor would disinherit her), Dorian did her best to keep Victor secluded. Victor soon after died, and Viki questioned whether it was of natural causes-or if Dorian killed him. Gaining a substantial amount of Victor's wealth as well as control of Llanfair, Dorian gained another trump card over Viki when she overheard Larry and Viki talking about Joe's congenital heart defect. Dorian maliciously revealed the truth to Joe-he passed on a heart defect to Megan and possibly to his unborn son. Racked with guilt, Joe was furious when he found out Viki knew. With their marriage in shambles, Joe began to drink heavily. Shortly after Joe and Viki's son Kevin was born-without any health problems. However, Cathy Craig-who blamed Viki for the death of her daughter Megan-kidnapped Kevin. The ordeal brought Viki and Joe back together and Kevin was eventually returned. Viki's college friend, Irene Manning Clayton, passed away and asked Viki to look after her teenage daughter Tina. Tina, a wild child, was involved with con artist Marco Dane. Marco blackmailed Viki by threatening to expose fake pornographic pictures of Tina, but he soon ended up dead. Viki was put on trial for his murder, but was eventually exonerated when Talbot Huddleston was revealed as the real killer. Viki was pregnant again but devastated by the news when Joe was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Joe passed away, but not before naming Arizona newspaperman Clint Buchanan as his successor at The Banner. Viki mourned Joe and named their newborn son, Joey, after him. Ted Clayton, whom Tina believed was her father, came to Llanview with his eyes set on Viki's money. Ted romanced Viki in an effort to get her fortune. Clint, who had started to develop an interest in Viki, was suspicious of Ted (who was actually con man Tom Clarkson). Ted even had Tina kidnapped, all in an effort to gain Viki's trust. Clint and Viki's feelings for each other were much deeper than either wanted to admit, and after a business trip to New York both realized it. Ted, wanting to keep control of Viki, drugged her and managed to instill fear and indecision about Clint in Viki's drug-induced mind. Clint attempted to save Viki but Ted poisoned him. Clint recovered and Ted was arrested. Feeling betrayed by Ted, Viki refused to enter into a new relationship. A frustrated Clint took up with Edwina Lewis. Meanwhile, Viki wrote an editorial on the Jenny Vernon/Katrina Karr baby switching case and refused to reveal her source when the case came to trial. Viki was sent to jail and Clint worked to get her released. Touched by his devotion and realizing she truly loved him, Clint and Viki married. Clint legally adopted Joey and Kevin. Viki was also able to return to Llanfair after enacting a clause that ousted Dorian if she ever remarried (as she did with Herb Callison). Clint became taken with newcomer Echo DiSavoy, who resembled a long ago love of Clint's. Echo was the daughter of said love and had come to Llanview to ruin Clint, for she blamed him for the death of her mother. Echo managed to seduce Clint and staged her own drowning, in hopes to have Clint convicted of her murder. Clint nearly went to prison, but the truth was revealed at the last minute. Hurt, Viki forgave his indiscretion. Tina learned that Ted Clayton was not her real father and tried to get information from Viki on who could be. Tina's persistence began to cause Viki stress, confusing Viki on why the subject of Tina's true father upset her so much. Tina discovered a secret room at Llanfair and found letters of Victor's to Irene which revealed he was Tina's father. Tina presented Viki with the information. Confronted with her father's infidelities, Viki snapped and reverted into Niki Smith. Viki remained clueless that she would sometimes emerge as Niki, while Clint began to suspect that she was having an affair. While living as Niki, she began a relationship with Harry O'Neill-who was also being pursued by Dorian. Con man Mitch Laurence, with dollar signs in his eyes, romanced Tina in hopes of getting access to the Lord money. When he found a letter of Victor's that stated if Niki ever resurfaced, the entire Lord estate would go to Tina, Mitch plotted to drive Viki over the edge (not realizing Niki had already emerged). With Niki already coming through and Mitch's scheming, Viki had a near breakdown and slowly realized that her alternate personality was taking control. Seeking therapy, Viki acknowledged that Tina was her half-sister, but by this point a greedy Mitch still wanted Viki out of the picture so his new wife Tina would get everything-and thus he would as well. Plotting to make Viki think that Niki was still emerging-despite therapy-Mitch planned to shoot Clint and frame Niki/Viki for the murder. Through various circumstances Mitch killed Harry O'Neill instead with Niki witnessing everything. The shock pushed Niki into the background and Viki emerged, but Tina was fingered for the crime. With Niki the only person that could clear her, Tina begged a fearful Viki to let Niki once again emerge and testify. Tina's lawyer eventually badgered Viki so much that Niki emerged and cleared Tina. One problem developed-Niki refused to relinquish control to Viki. This proved to be a major crisis for Viki and Clint's marriage as Niki had no desire to be committed. Clint pressured Niki to get therapy so Viki could return, which angered Niki. After getting into an auto accident, Niki pretended to be Viki and began to behave rudely to Clint, who wondered why "Viki" was being so cruel. Niki was hoping Clint would be pushed to the brink of divorce. Depressed, Clint began drinking too much and Niki found herself developing feelings for him. Tina, meanwhile, decided to get Clint for herself and arranged it so she climbed in bed next to a drunken Clint. Niki walked in and the shock thrust Viki back in control. A vengeful Mitch had Viki kidnapped, and Niki once again emerged. The tables turned when Niki aided her kidnappers in keeping "Viki" away from her family-Niki wanted freedom. Niki was eventually rescued but feared Viki once again gaining control-so she divorced Clint in order to really gain her freedom. Clint learned that Niki was really pretending to be Viki and began to court Niki in hopes of Viki re-emerging. Things weren't going well, so a desperate Clint arranged it so Niki would walk in on what seemed to be an amorous moment between Clint and Tina. The shock put Viki in control once again and she and Clint remarried. Tina had taken control of the Lord estate, as allowed because Viki had become Niki Smith again, but after a lawsuit Viki won everything back. Around this time, as Viki and her family would be shocked to learn years later, Mitch Laurence broke into Viki's house, drugged her tea and raped her. Viki soon found herself pregnant-but what she didn't realize was that she was carrying twins. One was Clint's and one was Mitch's. When she gave birth nine months later, Viki temporarily reverted into Niki Smith. Mitch's co-hort, Dr. Balsom, took Clint's daughter (Natalie) and sent her to live with his wife Roxanne, while Jessica's daughter Mitch grew up privileged at Llanfair, everyone believing she was Clint's daughter. Soon after birth, Jessica was kidnapped by Allison Perkins, one of cult leader Mitch's followers. Maria Roberts, an ex-lover of Clint's tried to make Clint believe Niki had returned and kidnapped Jessica. Distrustful, Clint left Viki but the truth was soon revealed, Jessica returned and Clint and Viki reunited. After witnessing a fight between Clint and Tom Dennison (the long lost twin of Joe Riley), Viki underwent an eight year memory loss, forgot Clint and believed Tom was Joe Riley. Discovering it was the result of a brain aneurysm, Viki underwent surgery where she had an out of body experience and traveled to Heaven. Reuniting with deceased family and friends, Viki was helped to remember her life with Clint. After Clint was blinded, he and Viki traveled to Arizona where, after a head injury, Clint seemingly traveled back in time to the Old West where he learned he needed to unite Viki's great-great grandparents-or Viki would never be born. With the help of her Native American friend Clear Eyes, Viki traveled to the Old West and helped Clint in his mission. The two returned to the present with only a vague and distant memory of their trip back in time. Viki received an invitation to her high school reunion and was shocked to learn she missed her senior year. Through detective work and hypnosis, Viki learned that she had missed her senior year because she had a baby. At the same time, schemer Michael Grande arrived in Llanview to find Eterna, an underground city that housed lots of gold. Convinced Viki knew the whereabouts of Eterna, Michael hired Leo Cromwell to claim that Viki had bore his daughter, Christine, her senior year. This scheme was exposed after Viki and others were trapped in Eterna. Newcomer Roger Gordon told Viki that they were lovers in high school, and that she had given birth to a daughter, Megan. Viki and Megan were shocked, as the two were well aware, but not very fond of each other. Slowly, a mother-daughter bond developed. Hurt after learning the truth of how Victor hypnotized Viki to forget Megan, Viki received a further shock when she learned she and Roger were still legally married. Resistant at first, Roger went through with an annulment, but had fallen in love with Viki again. Viki and Roger grew close, with alienated and upset Clint. Roger encouraged Viki to run for Mayor of Llanview and Viki agreed, with Roger becoming her campaign manager. The two continued to grow close, with Viki winning the election. Taking on organized crime, Viki's life was put in danger, which helped her to realize her true love was Clint. Crime lord Johnny Dee ordered a hit on Mayor Viki. Viki was shot and suffered a stroke, which left her speechless and paralyzed. During Viki's slow road to recovery, Johnny Dee broke into Llanfair and nearly killed Tina. A frightened Viki suddenly became dormant and Niki emerged, shooting and killing Johnny. Viki once again returned, still paralyzed (she wasn't when Niki was in control). Seeking revenge, Johnny's father Carlo attempted to drug Viki in an effort to bring out Niki and subsequently force her to kill Megan. This plot failed, Viki was cleared of Johnny Dee's murder and she resigned as Llanview's mayor. Megan was diagnosed with Lupus and her condition began to rapidly deteriorate. Viki was heartbroken when her eldest daughter passed away. Sloan Carpenter came to Llanview to write a book on Victor Lord and began working closely with Viki. Clint grew jealous and pushed away from Viki, who sought emotional comfort with Sloan. Viki helped Sloan to accept his gay son's death from AIDS, bonding the two in the process-and alienating Clint, who believed they were having an affair. Sloan confessed his love for Viki and kissed her. Clint further alienated Viki, who agreed to go away with Sloan for the weekend. Dorian ran into Sloan and Viki together, and called Clint to make him aware of his wife's activities. After dinner together, things between Sloan and Viki turned amorous and they made love. Clint, who realized that he had been acting like a fool with Viki, arrived to witness their afterglow. After much fighting, Viki told Clint their marriage was over and they divorced. The publishing of Sloan's book reignited Viki's suspicions that Dorian had been responsible for her father's death. The age old rivalry reached a new chapter as Viki openly accused Dorian of murdering Victor Lord. Despite Dorian's protests of innocence, her campaign worked and Dorian was convicted of Victor's murder. In prison, Dorian schemed her release by allying with con man David Vickers, who posed as Victor's long lost heir and fingered Irene for the crime. Sloan developed terminal cancer and attempted to keep the secret from Viki, but Clint soon revealed the truth. Wanting to make his final months happy, Viki married Sloan on his deathbed. Reeling from Sloan's death, Viki began to have disturbing nightmares about her father. To her horror, Dorian revealed that she had been sexually molested by her father from an early age. Viki's Dissociative Identity Disorder caused her to snap into the personality of Tommy, a young boy. Angry with Dorian, Tommy pushed her down the stairs and quickly reverted to a new personality, icy Jean. Jean kidnapped Dorian and kept her prisoner. Two more alters, little girl Princess and blunt Tori, developed. Dorian managed to escape but Viki and her alters continued on a reign of terror. Shocked, Viki soon realized that Tori, her alter, had killed Victor in the hospital. The whole truth came out and Viki began the slow process of healing. It was around this time that Viki discovered Todd Manning was her half-brother, and the two began to forge a strong bond. Carlo Hesser attempted to have Viki hypnotized into killing her own son Kevin as part of a complicated revenge scheme, but the plot failed. Viki contemplated a reconciliation with Clint, but that was thwarted when he married Lindsay Rappaport. Viki once again found herself clashing with Dorian when she hired reporter Mel Hayes to work for The Banner. While about to leave on a business trip, Viki and Mel switched sweats, resulting in Viki getting a note from Dorian meant for Mel. Viki got off the plane, and soon after it crashed, with all aboard killed. Dorian blamed her arch nemesis for killing her husband. Following the death of Mel, a depressed Viki visited the Crossroads bar where she met bartender Ben Davidson. While not even knowing each other's last name, the two were immediately attracted to each other and soon Ben and his "Blondie" were sharing their first kiss. Ben soon broke things off with Viki by telling her he was married with children, but Viki suspected he was hiding something. While visiting Ben, he was shot and Viki nursed him back to health. Ben revealed the truth about his past-he was not married, but rather was a former doctor wanted by the mob. Viki agreed to keep Ben in hiding as the two fell in love. A seething Dorian learned about Ben and vowed revenge on Viki by bringing mobster Hugo Monroe to town. Dorian employed Hugo's help in kidnapping Viki. Hugo was after Ben, but what Dorian soon learned was that Hugo was also responsible for the plane crash that killed Mel. After almost killing Dorian and Viki by locking them in a cellar, the two enemies teamed up and went to the authorities about Hugo-and attempted to end their animosity. Ben and Viki continued to fall in love as they dealt with the aftermath of Jessica being hit by a car. Dorian was revealed as the driver that hit Jessica, which caused her to lose her baby. Viki was convinced Dorian hit Jessica on purpose, and their rivalry intensified. Eventually the two made somewhat peace. As Ben and Viki prepared to marry, Skye Chandler came to town with proof that she was still married to Ben. Although she remained a thorn in their sides, Ben managed to get a divorce. Viki was diagnosed with breast cancer and forced to get a mastectomy. Ben stood by her and the two married. Gina Russo, a mafia don's daughter and Ben's former girlfriend, decided she wanted Ben back-so she had Viki kidnapped. Eventually Viki managed to escape by faking DID and during a struggle with Viki, Gina fell off a cliff. Viki received the shock of her life when Jessica's friend Natalie Balsom revealed that she was really Viki's daughter. Allison Perkins, who kidnapped Jessica years earlier, stepped forward with Natalie and revealed that Natalie was the baby she kidnapped-and Jessica was the baby she brought back, meaning Natalie was the true Buchanan. A DNA test proved this to be the truth. Viki reluctantly accepted Natalie into her home while slowly forging a bond with her. The trauma of Natalie's reappearance, as well as an erroneous hypnosis session with Rae Cummings, led Niki Smith to once again take control. Niki, as before, did not want to be married, so she did everything in her power to get Ben out of the picture. To that effect, she started to gaslight Natalie to make her think she had developed DID-then framed Natalie for pushing Ben out a window, a crime Niki committed. Natalie and the family eventually figured out that Niki was in control, so Niki went on the run and was kidnapped by Allison Perkins. In an attempt to free Viki, Ben was shot, and the trauma brought Viki back into control. Ben was left comatose. Dealing with her grief over Ben, Viki was shocked when Natalie revealed she was married-and her groom turned out to be a very alive Mitch Laurence. Mitch revealed he faked his death, and leveled Viki with a more shocking claim---Jessica was his daughter. He had drugged and raped Viki years earlier and Viki actually gave birth to twins (by two different fathers, as Jessica was Mitch's and Natalie was Clint's) while Niki was in control. Mitch had spirited Natalie-Clint's daughter-away as to insure Jessica would grow up with privilege. Tests confirmed this and Viki was horrified. When Jessica learned the truth she was confused and lashed out at her mother, leaving for London for a few months. Jessica eventually returned and reconciled with Viki. Viki received another shock when Victor Lord turned out to be alive. With the knowledge that she didn't really kill him, Viki was disgusted to see Mitch in cahoots with Victor, who desperately needed a heart transplant. Mitch kidnapped Natalie and threatened to have her killed and her heart transplanted to Victor-but Viki managed to stop this. Victor soon died, but not before Viki confronted her father with how disgusting she thought he was. With Victor now officially dead, a new, more recent will was read-leaving everything to Mitch. Viki was further shocked when Dorian returned to town, now married to Mitch. Kicked out of Llanfair, Viki and the residents of Llanview were plagued by Mitch for months until he was killed. She was shocked-but pleased-when she found out that recent Llanview arrival Walker Laurence was really presumed dead Todd. Viki was named President of Llanview University. Viki also began a friendship with Governor Brooks who was working with her son Kevin. Dorian had her sights set on the Governor, and was jealous of Viki's growing closeness with him. When Viki boarded a plane to Saranac to meet Brooks and watch Kevin give a speech, a devious Dorian snuck on. Unfortunately, the plane crashed and Dorian and Viki found themselves stranded together. After some time, they were discovered by Todd who returned them home safely. The experience bonded Viki and Dorian and they agreed to put their differences behind them. Viki soon ended her relationship with Brooks when she realized he was a corrupt politician. Viki began experiencing heart palpitations and feeling weak. She went to a doctor and discovered she'd had a mild heart attack, and was suffering from heart disease. Her condition worsened, and her last chance for survival was a heart transplant. Viki was admitted to the hospital, and awaited the procedure. However, corrupt Chief of Staff Dr. Long had been selling organs on the black market. The heart meant for Viki was contaminated when Long tried to steal it, and her family was left devastated. It was Dorian that went to a comatose Ben's hospital room and confided in him about the situation. She even reflected on the irony that Ben's heart was a match for Viki. Perhaps in an attempt to save Viki's life, Ben flatlined. Viki was unconscious at the time and her family wondered whether they should accept Ben's heart as a transplant. When Viki awoke, Jessica gave her the news of Ben's death, and begged her mother to consider taking his heart. After much deliberation, Viki realized Ben would always be a part of her, and went ahead with the procedure. Viki made a full recovery, and focused on caring for her family. Her feud with Dorian reignited when Viki was forced to deliver the news that Dorian had been fired from her position as Chief of Staff thanks to job neglect in the wake of Paul Cramer's murder. A furious Dorian vowed revenge, and enacted a plot to frame Viki for embezzling funds from Llanview University. Viki stepped down from her job and resumed her post as Editor-in-Chief of The Banner. Viki remains a steady figure in the lives of her children, and has recently noticed that Jessica has been acting out of sorts. Unbeknownst to Viki, Jessica is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Due to Viki's weak heart, Jessica is struggling to keep her disorder a secret, even if her mother is the person that can help her most.
