Press Statement – 1st May 2002 - Ardagh Glass Closure:

Ringsend Plant is Critical for Recycling Strategy

Socialist Party calls on Minister for the Environment to take Immediate Initiative

We have today written to the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr. Dempsey, calling on him to take immediate steps to secure the future of the Ardagh Glass factory in Ringsend.

The Ringsend facility is critical to the future of any serious glass recycling strategies in this state.

We have called on the Minister to take an immediate initiative involving the workers at the Ringsend plant; local authorities which have critical responsibilities in waste management and Rehab Industries which collects 80% of glass that is currently recycled, with a view to keeping the plant working in public ownership.

By putting the Ringsend plant at the center of an ambitious national glass recycling programme and bringing the workers to the heart of management of the plant, it is entirely possible to secure jobs and take a step forward in waste management.
