(Please note that this is here for my own personal recollection and not necessarily as anything of value or importance to anyone except myself.)
Solitary Neglect was started by Dan around March of 1999. The band was a typical suburban hardcore punk band, comprised of local skaters band BMXers. Dan was 15 and Erik was 17, and we didn't have a clue how to play our instruments or write songs. Early on, we had lots of our friends in the band, but most weren't really into the music which made finding a stable line-up difficult. Our songs were influenced by bands like Hellnation, Dropdead, and Code 13 along with some early '80s hardcore. But without enough members to fill out an entire band, it disintegrated over the year.
Erik always wanted to record the original songs that were written though just to have, so in April of 2001, we got our friend Chris from local band Full Scale Assault to play drums and had Dan switch over to guitar to record a demo as a three piece. Chris enjoyed playing with us and asked if we'd be interested in making a band out of it again. We agreed to go ahead with it and eventually recruited Jeff from another local band, the Dirty 30s, to play guitar.
At this point, we had our first ever stable line-up and steadily began writing songs over the next year. The early material was pretty abysmal, and it took us a while to develop our own sound. Over time, our songs became heavily influenced by bands like Heresy, Ripcord, and Siege. We then began playing shows regularly in December of 2002. With this line-up, we were fortunate enough to play some great shows, release a split 7" with Blastonecrosis from Portland, Oregon, appear on several comps, and improve over time. We hit a wall briefly when Jeff quit the band due to many differences in June of 2003. Thankfully, our friend Adam from Sleeper Cell was kind enough to fill in for us on shows for the rest of the summer until we found a permanent replacement.
Paul joined the band in September, and we picked up playing shows and writing new material again. We made an aborted attempt at recording in 2004 for our debut EP and then decided to throw those songs out and rewrite almost everything from scratch. The influences slowly began to change again as we wanted to sound more like BGK, Mob 47, and The Stupids mixed with old US bands like The F.U.'s, Gang Green, Adrenaline OD, and Poison Idea. We slowly began writing for our debut EP all over again as we continued to play shows.
In April/May of 2005 we recorded a six song EP of all new material at Slaughterhouse Studio in Western Mass. These songs would unfortunately never be properly released. We also recorded a ten song demo including nine originals and a Discharge cover in November of 2005. The line-up on this demo was Chris on drums, Paul on guitar, Erik on vocals, and Matt on bass. These would be our last ever recordings as we played our last show a day later on November 26, 2005 with the same line-up.
