A Spirit's Song

The night is my companion, as I ride this lonesome byway

The town must be far behind me before the break of day.

She was a pretty lass, a winsome lass, a lass I loved so true,

Yet ever will I curse her name for what she made me do!

The Ghost wood looms before me, as black now as my sin.

I pray that God forgives me, but I must enter in.

He was a handsome man, a noble man, a man both strong and brave,

Yet with my sword, I cut him down, and sent him to his grave!

Dark limbs reach out to grab me, cold hands tear at my face.

They drag me from my frightened steed, pulled down in my disgrace.

For she said to me, that to marry her, first a widow she must be.

And for me to prove my love for her, this task must fall on me.

Mad spirits prance about me, wild music fill my brain.

My pennance is to join them in everlasting pain!

And she calmly watched her husband die, said, "I'll tell them what I saw!

For your wretched act, they'll hang you man! You know! It is the law!

And with her heartless laughter at his blood upon my glove,

I knew that she betrayed me.....So I killed my own true love!

And soon my heart will stop beating, will lie still within my chest,

And I will close my eyes in death, but I will never rest.
