PEDRO ÁLVARES CABRAL
Portuguese navigator, born in Belmonte around 1467-68, and to whom D. Manuel I trusted the leadership of the second fleet he sent to India.

Cabral sailed from Lisbon on March 9, 1500, and as if he had changed his route to discover new lands, he soon found Brazil, on May 3, 1500, in Santa Cruz day. From there he went to India.

Upon his return, D. Manuel granted him many honours, but never requested his services again.

Pedro Álvares Cabral died forgotten, in the city of Santarém, some say in 1520, others in 1526. A monument in Rio de Janeiro was built on his behalf, and another one in Lisbon, in the Avenue that has his name.

OCCIDENT

With two hands - the Act and the Destiny -
We revealed. In the same gesture, towards the sky
One raises the tremulous and divine torch
And the other draws away the veil.

Was it the hour to have or to have had
The hand that tore apart the Occidental veil,
Science was the soul, and Boldness was the body
Of the hand that revealed it.

Was it Chance, or Willpower, or Tempest
The hand that raised the glowing torch,
God was the soul and Portugal the body
Of the hand that steered it.
