PERSONAL PROFILE

My name is Virginia Leddy. My maiden name is SHETTER. I presently live in Arkansas, but was born and raised in Loudoun County, Virginia. I am presently researching my family names of SHETTER, BALLENGER, MAPHIS AND MUNROE.

THE MAPHIS FAMILY

The MAPHIS and MUNROE side of my family belongs to my mother.
Thanks to many family members and a 1982 MAPHIS REUNION, we
have been able to locate some of this side of the family.
Many live(d) in Virginia, Maryland, New York and Florida. I
have just found some relatives in Virginia, Colorado,
California and Delaware; and added another branch to our
tree. There are still some gaps to be filled.

JOHANNES MAPHIS is the earliest member of the family we have
found. Johannes arrived from Germany by ship to Philadelphia,
PA in 1737 with a son GEORGE MAPHIS. They lived in
Philadelphia for a while before coming to the Shenandoah
Valley of Virginia.

GEORGE (1) MAPHIS and family lived in the Shenandoah Valley,
where the Maphis old homestead is just south of Saumsville,
Virginia. George MAVIS was born in 1738 and died in 1795,
leaving a wife and seven children:

George (2), Philip, John, Adam, David, Regina and Magadelene.
George (1) signed his will George MAVIS. Later, his sons
David, John, Adam and Philip spelled their names MAVIUS to
which John (or Johannes) signed his will with MAFIUS. John
died in 1828 leaving seven children: George, Samuel,
Christena, Eva, Hanna, Sally and Mary.

GEORGE (2) MAVIS married Madaline Miley Gochenour and had
four children that we know of: John Miley Maphis, Joseph,
Samuel and Lydia. I have found Samuel as being in the 5th
Virginia (Augusta Volunteers) during the Civil War. This has
been most interesting. There are also Lockhart, Gore,
Funkhouser, Hottel and Miley relations to this family.
John Miley Maphis married Elizabeth Ann Coffelt who died in
1894 and is buried at the Coffelt Family grave Edinburg,
Virginia.

Our branch of the family comes from LINDEN PORTER MAPHIS and
MARY SIDNEY FRANCES LOCKHART, married December 19, 1882 in
Winchester, Virginia. They had six children: George Turner
Maphis, Valaunta, Eula, Otelia, William Henry and Ladsie.
Ladsie is my grandmother.

If you would like to share your family with us, please email
or sign our guestbook and leave your surnames. Thanks.

THE MUNROE FAMILY

The MUNROE FAMILY has not been researched much. CHARLES
A. MUNROE SR.(1870-1918) married Hannah Johnson Ware
(1867-1953). They had four children: William Lloyd, Alice
Estelle, James Frank and Charles Albert, Jr.

Charles Albert Munroe Jr. was born in Baltimore, MD 1901. Our
family has just received some pictures and surnames of the
MUNROE family but not many connections.

THE SHETTER FAMILY

The SHETTER and BALLENGER branch of my family belongs to my
father. My grandparents have long gone (but not forgotten)
and I have not been able to find much information on this
side of the family. I do know the original Shetter family
began in Pennsylvania, but have been unable to document this
as of yet. So I have started with myself and have tried to
go backward in time. Many lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania
and West Virginia. Let me give you a little background. There
are many John Shetter’s, hope I don’t confuse you.

JOHN WILLIAM SHETTER Sr.: It is very hard to find
information on the Shetter branch of the family. John William
Shetter was born in Myersville, Jefferson County, WV, and I
have tried locating information from the Jefferson County, WV
Court House where they have notified me that there were no
male children born between 1891 and 1928, but a girl was born
to a John and Mary Shetter in 1892.

JOHN WILLIAM SHETTER, SR. was born September 14, 1894; died
October 4, 1987 in Sterling, Loudoun County, VA. and buried
at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia with his wife, Viola
Ballenger Shetter.

John William Shetter, Sr’s parents were John Shetter and
Scena Edwards. They had 4 children: Edith Rebecca, John
William Sr, James Clifton and Annie. John William Shetter,
Sr. married Viola Ballenger April 14, 1921 and lived in
Leesburg, Virginia; They have 3 sons. This is about all the
information I have on this side of the family for now.

THE BALLENGER FAMILY

Seems the BALLENGER family has moved all over the
east coast and it has been hard to pinpoint just where the
family originated. While I was home in September of 1997, I
located some BALLENGER gravestones in Hillsboro Cememtery,
Hamilton Cemetery and the Ebenezer Cemetery in Round Hill,
Virginia, all located in Loudoun County.

There isn’t much information here, but I hope I have made
this as interesting to you as it is to me. I would love to
hear from others who are or are not researching, but might be
related. And please check out the Surname Index for more
information.
