Artes on the highway (in Dutch "Artes op de snelweg") is a teamwork in which the guiding teachers and students explore the possibilities of internet and multimedia and learn how to use it in a critical way.

Starting from an assignment, close to the subjects history and aesthetics, the students of the fifth and sixth year (general and technical education) learn to work with multimedia and internet. Therefore they get the support of the history teacher and the language teachers.

The students' task is to collect as much information as possible, by means of internet and multimedia, about artists from Classicism till Cubism. We think of artists in a broad way. It's about painters, sculptors, architects, authors,… In the first place the students must learn how to work with internet and multimedia but they also must be able to develop a critical sense towards the information they are looking for. Further on they must be able to store the information they found to process it afterwards in the website. As the schoolyear goes on they will have to present their work.

The ultimate goal is to get to a website, made by the students themselves. To realise this they must be able to work together, evaluate each other's input critically and learn from each other. The results of this all won't be a finished product but a piece of work in a certain phase of its development. That's also how we look at it through the schoolyear. One works constantly at it, adds things and changes them. Students, teachers and everybody who's willing can see in which way the exercise has made progress. Everybody's welcome to give advice and tips. Surfing parents, brothers, sisters and friends can send an e-mail to the students in which they offer tips, because also this kind of communication, which is new, is part of the project.
