Moving
along
Removed the remaining bow rail
stanchion bases. Also removed the base where the forestay attaches
to the deck. Both hand rails are off now, and I am starting to remove
the screws holding the genoa track from the toerail. The first few
came off easily using a screw bit in my power drill and a pair of vice
grips underneath holding the nut. Along about the 5th or 6th screw,
however, I broke the bit, and work ground to a halt. Made a run to
the hardware store and bought a new drill bit, another standard screwdriver
(broke my other one several days ago on one of the stanchion bases), and
a can of liquid wrench.

Here's what things are
looking like so far
(click for a larger version)
I noticed
the bow looked a little too 'rounded', as if it had been patched somehow.
I started poking around with a screwdriver and, sure enough, it made a
crackling sound as I peeled off a layer of glass that hadn't stuck to the
surface underneath. Look closely at the larger version of the image
above and you'll see that the painted surface underneath is intact - it
was never sanded or roughed up. As a result, the fiberglass patch
job didn't stick.
I also
chipped away the putty around the hull-deck joint. I'll have to re-seal
this. Once the toe rails are off, I'll need to reef out all the old adhesive and rebed. |
