Smokey and Dianne----------------------Cheryl and Smokey

A Very Special Occasion
Written by Dianne Davis and Cheryl Johnson

Chapter One

TWO FANS

Once upon a time there were two Smokey Robinson fans from Rhode Island named Cheryl and Dianne.
So great was their love for Smokey's music that they would spend hours listening to it, discussing it, and having a general good time.
So passionate was their love for Smokey's music that they would travel to faraway places to catch his outtasight shows.
"He puts a happy spell on me." said Dianne.
"Me too! Me too!" echoed Cheryl.

Chapter Two

THE IDEA

"Hello." Cheryl answered the phone.
"Hi there. Got some news for you." It was Dianne.
" Smokey's going to be playing in Saulte Ste. Marie the night before his birthday. Whattaya say we go to the show and bring him birthday gifts?"
"Good idea!" said Cheryl.
Or was it?

Chapter Three

SPECIAL OUTFITS... SPECIAL TOKENS

Off to the mall!
"Why are we wasting time in this bookstore?" complained Cheryl, arms akimbo. "You KNOW that cowboy book is out of print and you'll probably never find it."
"You're right."
Dianne was disappointed. She had searched high and low for Buckaroo, the book she wanted so badly to give to Smokey for his birthday. But, giving up, she turned to leave the store.
"BUCKAROO!" Dianne exclaimed, pointing to the bargain bin. "BUCKAROO! And only $5.99!"
She had found her special token.

*
"Special outfits are NOT easy to find!" complained Cheryl stepping out of her dressing room.
"Indeed, they are not" Dianne agreed. "Tell me what you think of this outfit. Is it special enough for Smokey?"
Looking at themselves in the mirror, they exclaimed, "We are two foxes!"
They did a happy dance.

*
"Tattoo! Baby, that's you!" Cheryl sang , driving home from work.
Suddenly, as if by some force of nature, her car turned into the department store parking lot.
"Boxer shorts!" It dawned on her. "That's the ticket."
She had found HER special token.

Chapter Four

DETROIT LAYOVER

Airports are not generally considered very interesting places. A two hour layover can seem like two days when you're especially excited about reaching your final destination.
So how did our heroines manage to miss their connection to Saulte Ste. Marie?

*
"I'm sorry. That flight left twenty minutes ago." said the airline agent.
"How long does it take to drive from Detroit to Saulte Ste. Marie?" asked Dianne in a panic.
"Oh, about six hours." said the agent.
"Let's see. It's two o'clock now. The show starts at eight." Cheryl calculated. "We might just make it if we leave right away!"

*
A five minute shuttle to the airport car rental can seem like five hours when you're especially excited about reaching your final destination.

Chapter Five

THIS F---ING WINDOW WON'T CLOSE

"Put a little glass in that window, will ya, Cheryl?" asked Dianne. "This Michigan weather sure is cold."
"That it is. But this f----ing window won't close!" Cheryl cursed. "Stupid rental car!"

Chapter Six

CHANGE OF PLANS... CHANGE OF CLOTHES

"Do you think we'll make it to the hotel with time enough to shower and change into our special outfits?" asked Cheryl.
"Well, let's see. It's four o'clock now and I think we're just passing through Flint." Dianne did some quick calculations. "It's doubtful."
Changing into special outfits in a speeding car, with an open window, smack dab in the middle of a northern Michigan winter is NOT very special.

Chapter Seven

NOSE HAIR AND SPIT

"Hey, our seats were supposed to be front and center." Cheryl whined.
"Yeah. I wanted to be able to see nose hair." Dianne chimed in. "I wanted to get sprayed with Smokey's spit. How am I gonna get spit on in these seats? I'm going to complain."
So she stomped, arms akimbo, to the box office and made her complaint, convinced though she was that nobody would care.

Chapter Eight

OOOO-WEEEE!

We never believed in fairy godmothers. We do now. For, just moments after Dianne returned to her seat, the box office clerk approached her.
"Have you ever met Smokey?" she asked.
"No." said Dianne.
"No." said Cheryl.
Then she waved her magic wand and proclaimed, "You shall tonight."
"Oooo-weeee!" the two women chorused.
"Just remember to be at the backstage entrance when Smokey is singing his last song, "Bows".
"I never heard of a song called "Bows". Dianne was puzzled. "Must be on his upcoming release."
"I think she means "bows", as in curtain call," whispered Cheryl.

Chapter Nine

THE SHOW

Let it be soon. Don't hesitate. Make it now. Don't wait.

It's Smokey - sounding great and looking sharp in HIS special outfit.

Seeing a Smokey Robinson show is like going to a great party. People are friendly. Drinks are served. And the music is phenomenol! Smokey and his band are exceptional hosts! They even take special requests. (Thank you for singing "I Am. I Am" for us.)

More love and more joy than age or time could ever destroy!

Chapter Ten

BACKSTAGE FANFAREWELLS

"Why are we the only ones wearing party hats?" Dianne and Cheryl wondered.

* It's strange how cool goes out the window when cool matters most. But here comes Smokey, and our heroines are tongue-tied and goofy.
* "Say something heartfelt and lyrical to him." Cheryl urged Dianne.
"Uh-duhhhh-uhh." Dianne said to Smokey.
After autographs, hugs and kisses, photos, and a sincere "God Bless You", the curtain closed on a very special occasion. And they all lived happily ever after.
