National Guard Dad / The Neo-Traditional Librarian

I have moved my new content to

A Wisconsin Librarian

This blog is easier to update, especially for book reviews and spitting at the crooks and liars who are ruining our country. . I have ported much of the content of this site there and eventually, this site will wither and die, so stop and see me  in my new location.

National Guard Dad

I am the proud father of:

  • 2LT Jonathan Barnett of the 1-120th FA, currently serving in the Gulf.
  • ET1 Daniel Barnett (ret.) who served two tour in the Gulf on the USS George Washington.
  • PFC Michael Barnett of the 1-127th IN, currently escorting convoys around Iraq.

I am going to Camp Casey to take up the guidon.   In your heart, it is easy to understand, but it helps to have it explained and this mom does a great job.

"Your son volunteered. He knew what he was getting into ..." That kind of comment make me want to punch somebody. It's like blaming rape victims. The subtext is that my son was stupid enough to volunteer to defend our country so he deserves whatever happens to him. The Army and Guard are not rented mercenaries to be used and disposed at the whim of the president.

Republican quotes against the war. These quotes about presidential abuse of authority, the need for an exit strategy and how to undermine the president while supporting our troops are indeed from leading Republicans, but they refer to Clinton and Yugoslavia, where no lies were told and no US soldiers died.

Blogs

A Liberal Marines Progressive Perspective. How many returning war vets are staying Republicans?

Iraq the Model. Probably the most optimistic of the Iraqi blogs. Strong supporters of the invasion and Bush, even they admit to the many problems that exist.

Raed in the Middle is a realistic blog, not anti-American, but more clear eyed about the situation.

Operation Truth is America's first and largest nonprofit, non-partisan advocacy organization for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The Neo-Traditional Librarian

Most of  my Library Stuff is on another page, but I am keeping current reviews and comments here.

The life of Elizabeth I by AlisonWeir. Weir is an expert on the Elizabethan era and it shows. She knows it all, but loves Elizabeth. Not a frank or even handed appraisal, but an erudite love letter.

The other end of the leash : why we do what we do around dogs /
by Patricia B. McConnell.
An animal behavioralist explains the bases for most dog/human problems and make way too much sense.

Booklist joins LJ in giving my book a great review. Life is good. I know it is not a good idea to let other people's opinions affect your sense of self-worth, but it sure is nice to be appreciated. WorldCat reports only 238  libraries have bought copies - what's keeping the rest of you? Library Journal (February 2003, p. 125) gave  Libraries, Community, and Technology a very good review, including "For your own well-being and that of your library, read this book!"

I will be deleting the older items on this page whenever I feel like it. I'll try to retain any site/book recommendations or move them to the Good Reads for Librarians or Good Reads...Period pages.

I have renamed this site (formerly One Librarian's opinion) to better reflect its contents. Of course, this is still One Librarian's Opinion. Don't even think of holding my boss or employer responsible for my opinions.

Neo-Traditional: In other fields, this denotes an approach that combines an appreciation for the new with a concern for the best of the past. I use the term to mean a librarianship that is forward looking without turning its back on our historical mission, that uses the best and most appropriate of the new technologies without succumbing to technolust, that exists for the good of the community without being captive to a mere majority, that knows that librarians are educators and leaders not managers or marketers, that understands that books are not just artifacts but an unsurpassed container for our culture. As an example of a Neo-Traditional project, I offer a link to Upon the objects to be attained by the establishment of a public library  : report of the Trustees of the Public Library of the City of Boston, 1852, a digital version of a text of enduring value to librarians.

I also operate the Barnett Family website, which is primarily genealogy.
