J-14's Spotlight : up close with

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah chats with J-14 about
David, movies... and getting her hands dirty!

Sarah's got a confession to make. This independant gal with the toughest 'tude on tv has a soft side! Sarah admits she really misses co-star David Boreanaz. Now that cutie-boy David has his own spinoff Angel, Sarah doesn't get to see him as much. "Part of the reason Buffy worked was for Angel. So I get these, 'What if I can't do it on my own? What if I need David?' feelings?" Sarah tells us. "David and I had a very special relationship. In three years working together, we never had so much as a disagreement, and I mean, that's just unbelievable considering the hours we spent together." True enough! "But it's a very exciting time for him, and luckily, I think it'll be a good challenge for me. What this season is really about is that next step of growing up." And growing up is going to play a big role for Buffy. She's trying to make friends at college, she's got eyes for a teaching assistant, and she has to remain "secret identity gal." "Buffy's definitely less of a kooky Valley Girl then when she first came," Sarah says. "She's much more capable now. But the insecurity that underlies everything she does is what I think is so endearing about her. I really think that's what people can relate to." Sarah's regrets While Buffy tackles tough times in college, 22-year-old Sarah is tackling her movie career. In the past year, she starred in the movies Simply Irresistible and Cruel Intentions, but she says she's not in a rush to do another movie unless it's just right. Sarah was disappointed with the final result of Simply Irresistible. "I learned that just because you have great actors and a wonderful script from the beginning, does not necessarily mean that the movie's going to turn out well," she reveals about Simply. "I learned that, until you're really passionate and excited about something, until everything you think about is that project, you can't let other people talk you into doing things," says Sarah matter of factly. "Until I feel as passionate about a project as I did with Cruel Intentions, I don't want to do another movie again." Sarah does agree that there's pressure from her peers to do as many projects as possible. "People remind you constantly that as fast as stardom comes, it can go. And I think there was this sort of paranoia, this need to keep working. I know that I felt it." helping others That didn't stop her from taking a break this summer. She traveled with friends to London and Paris, and went to the Dominican Republic for a week to help build houses with Habitat for Humanity, a group that helps families in need. "I made a very good window sill, until someone stepped on it, and then I had to re-do it because it wasn't dry," she says, giggling. "I also learned how to lay a floor and I mixed a ton of cement. I've never had calluses like that on my hands. I guess I've never done an honest day's labor in my life, apparently," Sarah says, smiling. Luckily, Sarah isn't going to switch careers and become a carpenter. She's sticking to acting. And for Buffy fans, that's the best news yet!
