The Hammond Sound
Both of the gents pictured above are heavies in their own way. The one on the left originated the Hammond organ, the one on the right became one of its masters. The Hammond Organ sound is omnipresent in the music of the latter half of this century. Featured in countless jazz, soul, and pop recordings, the sound is very unique and recognizable. From churches and gathering halls all over the world to the recordings of such popular artists as James Brown, Bob Dylan or Bob Marley (and even in the background music of finer kung fu films or childrens' cartoons like Scooby Doo), the organ sound is there...heavy and sacred. It sends out vibrations that get you at the deepest and bring out an instant appreciation for the instrument, connecting you with sensations of wonder that are the reason people have always dug music and sound, since the neanderthal days. Anyways, click on the old man to learn more about Hammonds and click on Jimmy Smith to go to Verve Jazz where you can hear him play.**>SITAR MADNESS
**East and West have interacted a lot the last few hundred years, and I for one say it's tops. India's sitar instrument is a popular export which has really made a sensation the world over, especially in the 20th century. Like the Hammond, but a lot older, the sitar is a funky, soulful, sacred, and cosmic instrument which must be heard to be believed. It was made popular here in the West by sitar master Ravi Shankar, pictured here. He turned on a lot of early rock and pop heroes to the benefits of sitar. It can be heard in the recordings of such Western artists as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, A Tribe Called Quest, Alanis Morrisette, Beck, and lord knows how many other people. I'm going to link you up so you can hear this instrument.
I am going to start collecting different sound machines and devices to acquaint you with. Check back here for Echo Machines, didgeridoos, SP-12's, walkie talkies, Echoplex's, Talkboys, alpenhorns, and much more.
