WELCOME

Vampire fiction has existed for many years. It was not until the 1897 publication of Dracula that the world became fully aware of the possibilities behind the vampire myth. Stoker’s novel sparked a new fascination with the vampire. Since that time, hundreds of authors have linked their works to Dracula in some way. To illustrate this point, I have taken two modern authors of popular vampire fiction, Anne Rice and Brian Lumley, and compared their work with that of Bram Stoker. There are also interesting correlations between the new stories and the myths of old. I have included in this essay a brief description of vampire myths and their sources, as well as the philosophical basis authors have used to portray the vampire. At last, I found it appropriate to discuss why the vampire has remained so popular in the minds of horror fiction readers. They, far more then any other mythical creature, have assembled a variety of fans throughout the world. The vampire is something of an enigma that I have tried to decipher.
