I joined the Black Swamp Woodcarvers Club in 1989 and have been a faithful member ever since. My goal that year was to find something to occupy an 11 year old's summer. He didn't join till a year later but I succeeded in finally finding what I had been looking for most of my life: something artistic and creative that left me feeling great when I finished a piece. My first carving was Esmerelda Elephant, out of "Carving Animal Caricatures" by Elma Waltner. I used a chunk of 2 x 4 I found in the shed, an exacto knife and hot glue but it came out looking like it should and I loved it. Of course, you keep your first carving forever and I put it on display at every show!
The kid carved till he grew up and went into the Navy but I think some day he will continue since he was very good at what he did, competing with the adults in the club and winning some ribbons.
WOW! Just call me windy!! Here's some of my stuff.
