| The year is 3557 GSY. The Known Universe is at war. Mankind began on a small world on the outer rim of the galaxy, a species seeking to better itself and everything it touched. In this quest, it sowed the seeds of destruction on its own homeworld and, in an attempt to survive, reached out toward the stars. Leaving the cradle of civilization behind in favor of other worlds, humanity reached out to populated the void and bring life to dead worlds which were ripe for the taking. For a time humanity was to flourish before the unthinkable happened. Earth, homeworld of humanity, was destroyed in a nuclear firestorm, the reasons and perpetrators unknown to all but those who died in the holocaust. The old United Terran Alliance, the binding force between the human colonies, was thrown down and replaced by the Confederation of Colonized Worlds, an imperial government which ruled known space with an iron fist for over twelve centuries. It controlled every known habitable world, seeking out more to expand its reach and powerbase. Then it too came crumbling down. Thirty standard years ago, the prophet Tarl J'pter Altreas led an uprising on Earth and, with the aid of his Freudo tribesmen, threw off the reign of the Confederation of Worlds to create the Galactic Directorate. Rebellion soon swept across the stars as fully three-fourths of the habited worlds broke away from the Confederation to create their own governments. Some embraced the ideals of freedom long forgotten, while others chose greed as their path in the dark times to come. Brutal war was to follow as the Directorate battled the Confederation for control of the stars, billions dying in the infernos as burning planets brought light to the darkness. Now the war has come to a stalemate. The Directorate and Confederation exhausted themselves years ago and began to rebuild for anpther strike. A new arms race is in progress, the other powers watching these two titans for their own chance to strike and rise to greatness. A imperial war machine fighting to reclaim the stars. A religious autocracy where dissent is answered with a quick blade. A republic, an empire and two corporations fighting for their very survival. And in the center of it all stands one man, Tarl J'pter Altreas, the man who started this war and holds the secret to it all. These are dark times, when the blade carries more weight than the declaration of a government. Pity and remorse have been replaced by cruelty and a thirst for blood. This is the future of humanity. These are the Messianic Chronicles. |
