| _____Updated lazily over several days in October of 2003. Links have been updated as well. Be sure to check them out. Real RPG mod and the SS Crusher level are still up. |
_____Any questions or comments about SS2 or this site, then feel free to email me and I'll do my best to help or respond appropriately. If you got technical questions, they've probably been answered in the ShockGen forums. Use the function please. |
System Shock |
| _____System Shock (SS), as the name suggests, is the predecessor to System Shock 2. It was ahead of its time with surprisingly good physics, amazing graphics, chilling plot driven gameplay, and a fantastic take on the standard dismal FPS (First Person Shooter). It, like the sequel, are grossly underappreciated by the gaming public despite the glowing reviews by the gaming press. |
| _____Even for its age, SS still manages to look good with its mixed graphics using 2D sprites for enemies in sharp 3D environment at a staggering (for its time) 640x480 resolution. Throw in a beautifully executed "A.I. gone berserk" type plot and anime type relations to the character, and you will wonder why people didn't scramble for the game but instead went for Doom. Hooray for hype and its terrific ability to sell shitty products *cough*Xbox*cough*. |
System Shock 2 |
| _____SS's sequel follows a similar path from glowing reviews right down to horrible sales. Based on the Thief engine (for its great abilities with sound propagation, A.I., and physics), SS2 creates a world of its own. The creepy scifi environment, the growls from enemies... Its all scary as hell. |
| _____Following same non-conformist path as System Shock, it introduces pseudo-RPG elements while retaining the similar "Nearly everyone's dead, the few that are alive you can't see or talk to, you're humanities last hope. Oh, and your fly is unzipped" feeling and does it well. Other, seemingly SS only ideas, like severe constraints to ammunition and logs made the cut resulting in extreme paranoia while playing. If you listen to logs, you might not hear the shotgun hybrid until its too late but if you do, you might find out about a stash of nanites (money in the world of SS2) or the location of that keycard you need to get into Hydroponics Section A. Also by listening to the personal logs you find in crew quarters or maybe by the cafeteria or even on its owner's body. Obviously, this is not a game for little kids. |
