Most tourists and kama'aina never see a shark, possibly because they are looking for that sailing fin above the water. These photos prove just because you can't see a fin ABOVE the water, doesn't mean there are no sharks IN the water! Get close enough to establish eye contact, and you will see shark eyes reflect the same concerns as human eyes! |

The sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) has beautiful eyes as easy to read as a children's book. One of the reasons this shark - and other sharks - are seldom seen at Hanauma Bay is because the conservation area prohibits fishing, so the only blood in the water is caused by scrapes and cuts incurred by snorkellers who rub coral the wrong way. |
The Whitetip reef shark (Triaenoodon obesus) grows to about six-feet and can be seen in the Bay lounging under coral ledges (or in caves) because it is the only shark able to pump water over its gills without moving forward. | ![]() |
