August 19, 2006, 4:00-6:00 PM, Heritage Hall, Tallahassee, FL, USA
On a lovely Saturday August afternoon in Tallahassee, FL (the capital city of the Sunshine State of Florida) about 40 people of Indian (Asian) Americans gathered at the Heritage Hall in the RA Gray Building, S. Monroe Street.
The occassion was the celebration of Indian Independence Day (August 15 of every year; Indian Independence day is August, 15, 1947). The agenda included hoisting of the Indian flag, singing of Indian as well American National Anthems, speech by kids about Indian Independece leaders, a round table discussion (about the contributions of Indian Americans to the grass roots of American society) and socializing.
Following the flag hoisting and singing of the national anthems, the great grand son of Sardar A. Vedaratnam Pillai of Vedaraniam (aka, Vedaranyam and Thirumaraikadu) spoke about his contributions to the Indian Freedom Struggle. Several people were thrilled to know a Tallahasseean has such a wonderful connection to the Indian Independence movement.
