Aug 27 2002 BBC Monitoring Service - Mr.Jim Karygiannis , who is a visiting Canadian MP, has urged the Somaliland government to seek recognition of the international community in order to achieve a recognized status.
He said this during a press conference held at the Ministry of Information and Guidance. Mr Jim was accompanied by the secretary to the Somaliland parliament in charge of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Hon Muhammad Balgan. He said during his stay in Somaliland, he found that it as a Muslim country but with no extremists, adding that women played a big role in Somaliland's social framework.
Mr Jim promised that when he goes back to his country, Canada, he would urge the Canadian government to open an office in Somaliland, adding that it was highly possible to create business and investment relations between Somaliland and Canada in the future.
He said Somaliland had fulfilled some conditions to make it attain recognition, while the forthcoming democratic elections could boost its image to earn international recognition ...
