Somaliland leader receives US delegation, welcomes proposed gemstone project

A US delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in-charge of funding overseas companies is in Hargeysa for a visit.

    The delegation, headed by William Collen [phonetic], yesterday met the president of the self-declared administration of Somaliland and said the US would fund a new project in Somaliland to explore precious and other expensive stones in Somaliland.

    The head of the delegation assured Dahir Riyale [Kahin - the Somaliland "president"] that this project will uplift the economy of the self-declared administration of Somaliland, and Mr Riyale told the US delegation that the funding comes just when it is needed most, and called for the project to be implemented as soon as possible.

The UNHCR has donated equipment to Radio Hargeysa which is owned by the self-declared administration of Somaliland.

    According to reports from Hargeysa, Mr Stephen Morris, the UNHCR representative handed over the equipment to the information minister of Somaliland, Abdullahi Muhammad Duale. The equipment donated included antennas and studios [as heard].

    This is the first time the UNHCR has provided such a donation to the Somaliland administration...

Somaliland: President reportedly orders cut in khat flights

   
The president of the self-proclaimed Somaliland Republic authorities has issued a directive in an effort to reduce the number of flights bringing khat into the territory. The Somaliland presidential spokesman, Abdi Idris Du'ale, said that the president had ordered that no more than 50 khat flights would be allowed into the country. About 150 [light] aircraft bring in khat from Kenya and Ethiopia daily.

    The Somaliland president also ordered vehicles not to transport khat from across the border other than taking the commodity from airports. He ordered Somaliland forces based at Hargeysa, Burco, Boorama, Berbera and Ceerigaabo airports to enforce the directive.

    The presidential spokesman said that the administration would take severe action against planes and vehicles defying the order.

Somaliland: President in talks with visiting Egyptian delegation

   
The president of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, Dahir Riyale Kahin, held talks with visiting Egyptian business delegation at the presidency in Hargeysa yesterday.

    Commenting on the relations between Somaliland and Egypt, Mr Riyale said it was a long standing one, particularly in education and trade sectors. He said it was high time for the two countries to double their efforts in strengthening their relations after suffering a setback during the civil war in Somalia.

    While in Hargeysa, the delegation is expected to hold talks with businessmen and government officials to discuss business prospect.

UNDP donates health equipment to Somaliland


    BBC Monitoring -The UNDP has donated health equipment to the Ministry of Heath of the self-declared republic of Somaliland. The equipment was handed over to the health minister, Mr Muhammad Hasan Isma'il, by a UNDP representative.

    The equipment includes fridges and surgical equipment.
