    Serena Miller quietly unlocked the door to her three-bedroom apartment that she shared with her boyfriend, Nick. It was the day of her eighteenth birthday and she was hoping Nick was around. He had promised that he'd be home so that they could celebrate.
    The house was unusually quiet.
    " Nicky? " she called, hoping he was home.
    Her smile dropped when she got no response.
    I guess he's not here. * she thought to herself. " Happy birthday to me. "
    Sighing, she walked over to the closet to hang her coat up. On the way she stopped by the answering machine to see if there were any messages for her.
    There wasn't.
    She was about to go upstairs when her eyes caught something purple, lying on the nearby table.
    Curious, she walked over and picked up the brilliant deep purple rose lying there.
    With a gasp, she wondered where a rose like this had come from.
    She smiled as she saw a tiny white card, dangling from the delicate stem of the rose.
    Opening it, she recognized Nick's writing.

    Just wanted to let you know that I love you so much. Come upstairs in five minutes. Remember I love you always and forever.

    Serena smiled, kicking off her shoes as she wandered over to the stairs. A tingly feeling ran through her stomach as she wondered what Nick was up to. Though she tried her hardest she couldn't think of what he was doing.
    Five minutes later she slowly made her way up the stairs, following the single white petals on each step. At the top there was another little card.

    Serena, baby,
    Go into your room. I'll see you soon. Happy Birthday baby. Love you.

    She obeyed Nick's unspoken directions and slowly opened the door to the master bedroom.
    Serena gasped at the sight. There were dozens of roses everywhere, on the floor, shelves, bed, and furniture. Candles burning brightly were also placed strategically around the large apartment like room.
    " Nick? " Serena called his name. No answer.
    She spotted another white card on her pillow and wound her way through the maze of roses and candles to get to it. She picked it up and opened it.

    Serena,
    My darling, if you're reading this now it means you're in your room, sitting on your bed. I promise I'll see you soon. Happy birthday my darling. I love you.

    P.S. Stay right there and open your present. I want you wearing it tonight.

    Serena thought what present? Then she looked to her left and saw a brightly wrapped box with a large silver bow sitting on the floor next to her bed.
    Smiling, she grabbed the box off the floor and lifted it into her lap, opening it with agonizing slowness.
    Once the lid was off, she peeped inside and saw absolutely nothing. Serena carefully lifted off sheet after sheet of tissue paper, hoping this was not what Nick meant.
    At the bottom of the box was another envelope. Serena shook her head at Nick's antics and opened the note.

    GOTCHA! Sorry sweetie, I couldn't help playing a little joke. Your real present is under the bed. Love you.

    Serena reached under her bed and came up with another box, identical to the first one. She opened that one and what she found made tears fill her eyes.
    The dress was absolutely gorgeous. It was a deep green color with tiny sparkling beads, sewn in a starburst pattern across the dress.
    Serena picked it up gently as if it might break. She held up the dress and saw it would be a perfect fit.
    There was also a last and final note at the bottom of the box.

    Pretty good for my first time shopping huh? Well I hope you like it because I know you're going to look so beautiful. I want this night to be so special for you. I'll see you soon.

    Serena set to work only minutes later getting dressed for wherever Nick might be taking her.
    As she slipped the dress over her head and watched it fall in silken waves, she smoothed it down and looked herself in the mirror. A perfect fit. She felt like a princess from some fairy tale land waiting for her prince to come and carry her away.
    She was just finishing putting her hair up in spiral curls when there was a knock on the bedroom door.
Serena smoothed the dress and then opened the door. Nick was standing there; clad in black dress pants and a black jacket over a green shirt the exact same color as Serena's dress. He was holding a bouquet of white roses with tips and his eyes widened when he saw Serena.

    " I knew you'd look beautiful but you're absolutely amazing. " he whispered the words.
    He moved to hold her and Serena stepped into his embrace.
    She could look into his eyes as she lifted her head up and as she did, Nick leaned down and kissed her ever so gently.
    When they pulled away Nick picked the roses up and handed them to her with a smile.
    " They're beautiful Nicky. " she murmured, hugging him tightly.
    " Happy birthday, baby. " he picked her up in his arms and twirled her around in his arms once before setting her back on her feet. She giggled.
    " Is my princess ready to get going? " Nick asked, taking her hand. She nodded.
    " By the way Nicky, where are we going? " Serena inquired.
    " Ah ah, not so fast little one. That's for me to know and you to find out. " he called her the nickname he had affectionately given her when they first started going out.
    She just stuck her tongue out at him.
    " Don't stick your tongue out unless you're plannin' on usin' it. " Nick joked.
    She rolled her eyes as he kissed her tenderly as he led her out the front door of the house and to his Prowler.
    " Nicky, now I know something's up. You never drive this car. " Serena raised a questioning eyebrow at him.
    " Special occasion. " he smiled and refused to say anymore. She just shook her head and Nick held the passenger side door open for her. She slid into the car and shut the door as he ran around to the other side and climbed in. He slyly produced a blindfold from his pocket.
    " Nick, don't even think about put" Serena trailed off as he slipped the dark cloth over her eyes and placed tiny kisses on the corner of her mouth as he did so.
    " Okay, you can do whatever the heck you want now Carter. " she gasped. He laughed.
    " You're only gonna be wearing this for a little bit baby. Just until we get to your birthday surprise. "
    She agreed, slowly nodding her head. Nick started the car and drove away from the curb. Minutes later, Serena was starting to get a little restless.
    " Nick, what are you doing? " she asked.
    He didn't answer her and only ran his fingers up and down her arm. The truth was that he'd been driving around in circles for the past ten minutes hoping to confuse her. It definitely seemed to be working.
    Finally he decided to turn off on the right road and head towards their destination.
    Several minutes later he pulled into the parking lot of Serena's favorite restaurant. She rarely went there, (even by herself or with him) because it was so expensive. But Nick figured that since it was her eighteenth birthday and a very special one at that, he would take her. After pulling into a parking space he leaned over and unbuckled both of their seatbelts.
    " Are we here? " Serena asked, lifting her hands to undo the blindfold.
    " Easy little one. " Nick chuckled, stopping her and undoing the knot with his own hands. He pulled the cloth away and she gasped when she saw where he had taken her.
    " Nicky, you didn't have to bring me here. I don't deserve this. " she told him honestly.
    " Baby, listen to me, I love you and I want to make this your best birthday ever because you do deserve it. You're my girlfriend, which makes you deserving of everything I choose to give you and more. " he murmured. " Now come on, I promised the best birthday ever and I'll definitely give it to you. "
    He kissed her cheek lightly before taking her hand and leading her into the restaurant.
    " Reservations for Carter. " Nick stated when he and Serena had reached the front of the line.
    " Right this way sir. " a waitress said after checking a sheet of paper. They were shown to their seats and were left alone for a few minutes to figure out what they wanted to order. They already knew what they wanted though. Nick smiled at Serena as she sat next to him. ' God she's so beautiful. ' he thought to himself. His thoughts were interrupted when a waiter came over to take their orders. They both ordered their food and once they were alone again, Nick pulled her close.
    " Happy Birthday my love. " he murmured, " I have something for you. Close your eyes. "
    Serena's eyes fluttered shut slowly as Nick got up out of his chair to stand behind her, a small velvet box in his hand. He slowly opened the box and pulled out a delicate gold chain with a tiny 18 on it surrounded by six tiny diamonds and emeralds.
    " Open you eyes baby. " he smiled as Serena gasped and looked down at the sparkling little charm.
    " Oh my god, Nicky. " she smiled widely. " Thank you. " He kissed her gently, long and slow. When they pulled apart, they both smiled. Their food was served about ten minutes later and the rest of the dinner was spent kissing and hugging in between eating.
    A few hours later, Nick, pulled the car back into the driveway.
    " Baby, wait here can you? " Nick asked, kissing her lightly. Serena nodded.
    " I'll be back. " he walked up to the front porch and unlocked the door. Serena watched as he walked through the doorway and then sat back, waiting for him to return. A few minutes later, Nick came wandering back out of the house and took her hand, leading her out of the car and up the walkway.
    " What do you have planned? " she asked.
    " Baby, you'll find out, I promise. " Nick told her. She smiled. Nick opened the door and Serena's mouth dropped open. Roses and candles now covered the entire first floor of the house and also lead up the stairs.
    " Nick, what does all this mean? " Serena questioned. He took her small hands in his big ones and pulled her into his arms.
    " Baby, I have a question for you. You don't have to say yes and I don't want your answer to be because of me. I love you and I want you to think about this for a little bit if you need to. "
    " I love you too Nicky, now what's your question. " Serena wondered aloud.
    " Sweetheart, it's your eighteenth birthday and I want to make it special for you. Will you let me show you the true meaning of love? Will you let me make love to you? "
    Serena was absolutely speechless and her eyes widened. Her and Nick had discussed this once or twice before but at the time; neither had felt that it was the moment to take their relationship to the next level.
    " Nick " she started, not knowing what to say. He interrupted quickly, not wanting to embarrass her.
    " Baby, you can think this over for a little bit. I'll be up in my room when you decide. " he reassured her with a gentle hug and a kiss. She nodded.
    " I love you and I respect you either way. " Nick said and started up the stairs. Serena watched him leave, trying like hell to make a choice.
    " Nick! " she stopped him at the top of the stairs. " Wait! "
    He turned around and wrapped his arms around her when she ran up to him.
    " Yes baby? " he asked.
    She said only one word.
    " Yes. "
    Nick looked at her carefully. " I don't want to pressure..."
    Serena put a finger against his lips.
    " Yes. " she repeated.
    A smiled broke out on his face and he caressed her cheek gently with his thumb.
    " Serena, are you scared. " he murmured.
    " A little bit. " she admitted.
    Nick looked at her like he could tell that she was trying to be braver than she really was.
    " Okay, fine, more than a little. "
    He smiled gently.
    " It's okay to be scared. To tell you the truth, I'm a little nervous too. " he told her.
    She let out a tiny laugh and a sigh of relief.
    " Never thought you'd be one to be nervous. " she whispered, barely audible, now that she was incredibly embarrassed.
    " Believe me baby, I'm just praying that I won't mess this up for you. " Nick replied.
    " Don't say that Nick, this will be perfect because we love each other. " she smiled a little.
    Nick gave her and impish grin before lowering his head to kiss her, twining his tongue with hers. When the kiss was over, Serena found that Nick had been gently guiding them in the general direction of her bedroom. They now stood in the doorway.
    " Nick..." she began. Now he was the one to stop her from talking.
    " Serena, I don't want you to talk tonight. I just want us to feel. Don't think about what's going on and just do what feels right. "
    She nodded at his passionate words, since she didn't know what she was doing. Nick slid one arm around her back and one supported her beneath her knees as he lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed, gently laying her down. Serena looked like she was about to say something but Nick shook his head at her, reminding her or what he had said. Gently, he bent down and whispered in her ear. " Do you want to undress yourself or can I do it? "
    " You can do it if you want to. " she murmured.
     Of course I want to. " he whispered. " I can't wait to see how beautiful you are. "
    Serena looked at him like she didn't get his true meaning.
    " You'll find out. " he smiled at her as if reading her thoughts.
    Slowly he lifted her arms, planting hundreds of tiny kisses up and down each one, helping her to relax.
It took a little bit of time, but when Nick finally lowered his lips to hers she kissed back willingly. Knowing that she would try to pull away when he started pulling her clothes off, he kept kissing her and slowly moved his hands to the buttons on her pajama top she had changed into. Serena didn't even realize what he'd been doing until her shirt was halfway undone. Nick looked into her eyes and immediately recognized her expression.
    " Serena baby, calm down. I know you're afraid but I'm aiming to make you feel good, not scare you into being completely terrified of me. " Nick tried to comfort her. " Now just take a deep breath and do what I told you. "
    She nodded. Nick could see that after a few minutes she was definitely more relaxed with him touching her. He smiled as he continued to undo the last two buttons on her shirt. She breathed in deeply when he pulled apart the two ends, exposing herself to him. Nick gazed at her with an expressionless face. Serena looked upset now.
    " Nick, maybe we should..." she started.
    He interrupted her, murmuring quietly. " Baby, how could you have hidden this from me for a year and a half? You're so amazingly gorgeous. "
    Ever so gently he leaned down and placed the softest kiss at the hollow of her throat. She let out a quiet sound. He smiled and realized that she was starting to let go of her inhibitions.
    " Sweetie, let it go. I want to get to know every inch of you. You're gonna have to tell me what you like the most. " Nick cooed softly, trying to get her to open up to him. She didn't say anything but Nick's closed eyes flew open when he felt the touch of her hands on his back, lifting the bottom of his T-shirt slightly.
He felt her hands shaking a little.
    " Baby, you've seen me shirtless millions of times. It's nothing new. " he grinned cheekily.
    Quickly, Nick pulled Serena up with him and he let her hands pull his shirt off. She smiled slowly, gaining some confidence. He lightly pushed her back down on the bed, kissing her playfully in various
spots. She laughed a little but when she looked up into Nick's eyes, which were darker, almost grayish blue with passion, she knew he wasn't going to hurt her or do anything she didn't like. All she saw in his eyes was the love and passion he had for her and she quickly became more comfortable in his embrace.
A look in his eyes silently asked her if he could continue. She nodded. He smirked a little before leaning down to kiss her neck. Her fingers were playing with the little blond hairs at the base of his neck and it drove him absolutely crazy. Nick knew that she had no idea what she was doing to him, but figured she'd
find out soon enough. Serena moaned quietly as Nick's soft lips moved to the flesh of her chest.

    She smiled a little and then her face turned serious.

    Her eyes filled with tears. She didn't know how she could have gotten a guy who was sweeter than Nick.
    " You're so special to me. " he sighed. " I love you so much. "
    " I love you too Nicky. " she smiled.
    He pulled her against him, laying her head gently on his bare chest.
    " Baby, are you tired? " he asked, yawning a little.
    " Mmmhmm. " she half answered, already half alseep in his arms.
    He laughed a little before rubbing her back gently. The last thing Serena heard before she fell asleep that night, was Nick whispering to her.
