Welcome to the Wonderous World of Whimsy I like to Call the Long Leaf Pine Tree
The Long Leaf Pine Tree is a native of the Florida Panhandle and can be found everywhere around Niceville.  Unfortunatly, the tree is being beaten out by the short leaf pine, a non-indigenous tree.  The Long Leaf is an amazing tree, they grow to be over 120 feet tall.
Long Leaf Pines, like all pine trees, are gymnosperms.  This means that they have "naked seeds".  It also means that they do not have flowers, but rather special male cones with which to disperse pollen and then female cones that catch the floating pollen out of the air.
The amount of pollen these trees produce is famous.  Everything in this area develops a layer of yellow powder in the spring.  People with allergies are troubled by going outside due to the enormous amount of pollen.  I have pictures of this, but need to find them.
