Meaning

Literally, the story of a man trapped in an asylum and plans a mutiny among is fellow incarcerates. Metaphorically, the asylum of society and a man trapped forever.

During the tour for Master Of Puppets, it was a fixed part. After that, it was occasionally played at the second stop in a location.
Kevin handles the finger-picked acoustic intro on his custom Flying-V (clean toned), all-white body with the inlets spelling out "RADIO-FRIENDLY SUCKS" backwards so the fans and cameras can read it. An empty, disected package of dental floss was screwed onto one half of the body and is used to hold a pick when a quick switch is needed on The Unforgiven, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and used by Sonic on Call of the Ktulu.
The solos after the coda are layered with 3 guitars. Live, Kevin plays the rhythm section, Sonic plays the first solo with Marshall taking the lower layer. Later in the solo, another enters, played by Amy Rose on the keyboard (set to metal guitar sound).
