Sooke Sewage Experts
Letter to the Sooke News Mirror, June 11, 2000
CC Sooke Mayor Ed Macgregor
by Anita Voss

Reading letters in last week's Sooke News one gets the impression that wehave Sewage experts popping up in Sooke like dandelions after a spring rain.

I would like to know what training these various letter writers have in the matters of sewage in order to speak with so much "authority" about the topic of sewage, its treatment and disposal in Sooke.

I and several Sooke residents spent a lot of time researching the facts about a possible sewage outfall about ten years ago. The results are well known.

However, here are some new facts about consequences of a possible outfall below the Sooke Bluffs. Inquiries with the Scientist in Charge of the current and tide section of the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Institute of Ocean Sciences told me the following, based on a computer printout, which he has faxed to me.

During edding there are strong currents along the bluffs directed west, staying near the coast including the bay of the native land at the end of McMillan road.

During flooding the currents run also along the shore but in opposite direction flowing towards Whiffin's Spit and East Sooke. These currents coming from the Bluffs do not go directly towards the open Strait.

Residents of Sooke should be fully nformed of the selection process of a sewage consultant. As consultants, anyone can claim cunsultant status and can never be held accountable for their advice. We have to know their training, references, and, previous work they have done.
