Sewer could force people out of town
Letter from Jim Horel to the Sooke News Mirror, November 13, 2002

Council is out of touch with the ramifications of the tax burden to residential tax payers of the specified sewer tax area. I am a senior and long-time resident of Sooke. Over the past three years I have seen our council take the road to development. Not that I disagree with planned, well-executed growth. But, they have gone too far with this plan to tax a small group of residential tax payers to pay for a sewer system that really only serves the business community’s interests.

This plan, if passed, will force me to move from Sooke. As a senior, I live on a fixed income. I have a tight budget and the cost of increased sewer taxes combined with hook-up costs will simply be more than I can afford. I also take exception to the mayor’s comparison of tax increases to a daily cup of coffee. What about the costs of hook-up? I don’t know many seniors that can afford these costs. My vote will be for candidates who truly understand the effects on seniors this tax increase will bring.
