STATE HISTORICAL MARKER DEDICATED
IN FRIENDSHIP

Oklahoma Department of Transportation Directional Signs have been placed just north and south of Friendship to inform motorists of two historical markers which are now located on the northeast corner of the intersection in Friendship across the road from the Friendship Baptist Church. The historical markers were dedicated on November 1, before a crowd of approximately sixty persons.

One of the markers is an official Oklahoma State Historical Marker, that was approved by the Oklahoma Historical Society, after an application was filed by the Friendship History Project. One side of the Oklahoma State Historical Marker contains a short history of Friendship, which was called Alfalfa when it was settled in the 1890's soon after the area was opened for homesteading. The first Friendship School was originally known as Clabber Flat but changed its name to Friendship because it was the home of the Friendship Baptist Church. Alfalfa, which had its own post office for two years, became known as Friendship after the church was moved there in 1908.
