These are links to sites dealing with the specific branches of mathematics in which Sophie concentrated her research throughout her lifetime. I have tried to keep in narrowed down specifically to her own disoveries and contributions, but I have also included some general sites on Fermat's Last Theorem, and on mathematics in general- for anyone who has a general interest in math. (Some of these sites can be a bit heavy. Consider yourself warned...)
- The Top Twenty Sophie Germain Primes. What on Earth is a "Sophie Germain Prime?" Click here to find out more about these gigantic numbers...
- Palindromic Sophie Germain Primes: Harvey Dubner of Dubner Computing Systems has a site dedicated to discovering Sophie Germain Primes that read the same forwards and backwards... Read his innovative paper here!
- This is actually a biography... But it includes a very detailed explaination of Sophie Germain's Theorem.
- Timeline of Fermat's Last Theorem: Excellent timeline of the major contributions to FLT, including contributors whose ideas lead to the concepts on which the Fermat conjecture was based (i.e.: Pythagoreas...) Yes, Sophie IS mentioned and given credit for her pioneering work on FLT.
- What we know about FLT A highly technical explaination of FLT including history of the theorem, current status, Andrew Wiles's lines of attack, and a debate on whether or not Fermat himself actually had "the proof" at the time of his death.
- Fermat's Last Theorem A comprehensive site on FLT- the world's most infamous Mathematical problem...
- Sophie Germain Primes. More info on these primes.
- The Proof. This is the site from the NOVA television program about the 1994 proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. There is a whole section dedicated to Sophie and her role in the proof of this theorem. (For a link directly to this section, go to the biographical links page.)
- The Best of MathNews. This site has plenty of information on math in general, PLUS lots of other stuff to amuse yourself with. (PS: Be sure to check out "Grumpy Young Frosh" and "Mathies: The Gathering." Bring your sense of humor...)
