Chapter 3:  Lam Hui Phong's Mistake
Lam Hui Phong's perspective:
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I was very excited to tell Quay that I was accepted into the Oxford University in England. I knew she would be excited. The look on her face was rewarding enough for me. After all she has been so helpful and supportive of me over these past two years we have dated. She helped me get the manager's position at Grand Shanghai, the most popular nightclub in Shanghai. I felt so much gratititude for her.

I still remember how we met. I was a waiter at a small lower-class restaurant; Quay reluctantly came in with her cousin Suet. "I heard this restaurant is very good. Come on in let's try it." Suet said in a sweet voice. Her voice was always sweet. I'm sure she could be a singer.

Well anyways, Quay looked around and held onto her purse very tightly as she pinched her nose walking in. Suet asked her to sit down but she refused saying that the chair was too filthy. Suet immediately wiped the chair and asked her to sit, but instead of taking the seat right away she pulled out a handkerchief from her purse and laid it on the chair before sitting down.

I noticed how nice and sweet Suet was but Quay was a arrogant nothing to me. My co-workers and I thought she was the snobbiest person in all of Shanghai. So we decided to play a trick on her.

I walked by with a cup of cooled tea and my co-worker supposedly 'accidentally' pushed me into Quay. I splashed the tea onto her lap. "Don't you know how to be careful!," she screamed standing up and wiping off her skirt.

I pretended to apologize as I quickly walked pasted her and was surprised by her response. "It's okay, you probably didn't mean it." She said in a genuinely sweet and casual tone of voice.

It wasn't harsh and cruel like earlier. I turned back towards her to make sure it was her and not Suet who said those words because Suet was very kind but Suet wasn't there. She was at another table, so I apologized to Quay. For a moment I was shocked thinking this arrogant girl wasn't so snobby.

But then Quay said, "Suet, let's get out of here. This place is just trashy." A comment that made me realize, I was too quick in changing my original thoughts about her personality. Suet immediately apologized for Quay's comments as she followed Quay out.

That's the reason I remembered Quay's face. I didn't think I would ever see her again but a few weeks later I was writing an article about the unfortunate lower class for Heaven's News, the newspaper firm I also worked at. I needed more than one job in order to support my family. My father had passed away when I was young so my two sisters and my mother all depended on me.

In order to write a good paper I helped out at the fundraising event which I didn't mind because it was fun. I'd do it all over again if I were wealthier with more time. But the best thing that day was I had another chance to get to know Quay. I realized I was initially wrong about her. She was a very charitable person helping out at a fundraising event. I saw her working with kids and helping elderly people. It amazed me!

The third time I saw her was when I started liking her. I was running away from gangsters who were after me because I was nosey and saved a girl that they tried to sell to a whore house. As I was fighting with them, more of their accomplices joined them. I was already hurt from the few I fought so now that they outnumbered me, I had to run or they'll probably kill me. I ran into the new Shanghai shopping center because I knew they would have a hard time getting in such a classy place.
Hiding in the racks Quay and Suet saw me. I put my finger over my lips so they wouldn?t disclose my location. I was sure I was caught now. For some reason I trusted Suet would keep me safe with her good heart and all but I wasn't so sure Quay would. I know I saw her at the fundraiser but I still wasn't too positive about her.

To my surprise, Quay immediately arranged the clothes to hide me. After a while I peeked through the clothes and saw Quay looking concerned. I came out and she looked worried. She looked around and walked quickly out the store. I followed her outside the store, where she gave me some money saying, "Here take this and leave." I figured she saw my wounds and wanted to help me see a doctor. I thanked her but refused the money and left.

A few weeks later I saw her getting bullied by some scandalous men. Five of them were circling her. She screamed, "Get away from me! I'll call the police! Get away!" But the men came closer.

I immediately interfered. I fought vigorously with the five men to save Quay. Each time I punched one of them I needed to make sure I seriously hurt them so they couldn't get back up or we'll both be doomed. Finally when I noticed I had the upper hand, I grabbed Quay's hand and we ran out of there

After that incident she smiled thanking me and we started seeing each other everyday for a few weeks as friends. She helped me out a lot. I owe a lot to her and I'm really thankful I found such a wonderful friend. After all she did for me I realized she liked me but I wasn't fit to be by her side. She was from the upper class and I was from the lower class.

Then as fate would have it, I finally had the courage to ask her to become my girlfriend. One rainy night, only two weeks after we met, we had an argument because as we were entering a fancy nightclub, one of her friends from the same social class as her insulted me. He called me a poor bastard and said that I didn't have any manners. I was furious so I fought with the man.

She pulled me away to stop me from fighting. "You are an intelligent man! I know you can make it and proudly come into this night club if you wanted!" she screamed. "Why must degrade yourself by fighting with other people like a brute?" she asked furiously.

"Maybe I'm not too smart! Maybe I'm just a brute!" I yelled walking away. "I'm not good enough to go in with you anyways Miss Quay Chiang!"

She immediately followed me. "What are you talking about?" she asked.

"I'm not even good enough to shine your shoes, how can I expect us to have anything more!"

"More?" she said softly. "You know how I feel about you! Why can't you ask for more?" she screamed. I could sense the frustration in her voice. She really cared about me and was upset I was treating her this way.

I looked at her and walked away. I couldn't give her anything with my lifestyle. Why should I harm her reputation? She followed me even though it was raining very hard. I turned around and screamed at her to go away. She stood still in the middle of the street looking at me. I looked at her. We stood there just staring at each other in the freezing cold as the rain poured for a moment.

My heart was pounding and I could tell she was furious about everything too. We were obvious two stubborn people who cared about each other. She was a good person and I had to admit I was interested but really waht could I offer her but a life of proverty?

Suddenly a car was coming by and didn't see her in the crazy rain. I immediately pulled her out and embraced her in my arms. She held onto me tightly saying, "I owe you my life. Once again you saved me. How can I live without you?" she cried.

Her words melted my heart. I looked at her lifting her chin. She was beautiful. We kissed passionately and that night I asked her to be my girlfriend.
