Episode 16: Triple Twist
Episode Sixteen : Triple Twist

===
THE PLANE CRASH & FIRST TWIST
===

A warning rang throughout the plane.  "Please, ladies and gentlemen, I cannot stress enough... DO NOT PANIC," screamed a flight attendant as she jumped out of the emergency exit with a parachute.

"Survivors!  Survivor people!  Hello?" Travis yells, "Can we please gather at the back of the plane?  Back of the plane, please."

All of the Survivor contestants had intentionally been given randomly scattered seat assignments, so the had no idea who their fellow contestants were until they were gathered at this moment.  Quickly, they looked over the competition: Aaron, Adam, Andrew, Brenda, Chad, Chris, Jacob, Josh F, Josh S, Kevin, Kira, Kyle, Lucus, Nichole, Robin and Vanessa.

There was no time for greetings, however, as Travis began barking orders in his usual Type-A demeanor.  "Okay, folks!  As you know, the plane was supposed to be headed for the Everglades, but since we flew through a mysterious aurora we’ve somehow been transported to this cold place.  Since we are quickly plummeting down to the earth, I suppose that we have no choice other than to bear the snow for a while."

Groans.

"Okay.  After the impact, it may be tough for us to find each other, so I’M GOING TO NEED YOU ALL TO CHOOSE TWO TRIBAL LEADERS... they will be responsible for collecting everyone if we recover from the crash.  You can decide as a group however you want, but I’m going to need someone to give me an official answer as soon as possible.  The two leaders will ultimately be decided by the first person to give me an official decision."

The Survivors looked at one another, confused, wondering where this tribal leader thing was going.  But before they could even ask, much less choose two people to lead them, the plane began to nosedive.

"Okay folks," Travis said, "Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go find my seat cushion and hope that it can be turned into a floatation device."

With that, the plane hit the ground in a spectacular, multi-million dollar fireball.

===
DEMOCRACY: JUST A PIPE DREAM?
===

After they had recovered from the crash, the sixteen Survivors stumbled out into the snow, and realized that even though no tribes had been chosen, they were all free to talk to one another and begin to decide who they could trust.

Introductions were made, and some Survivors even began contemplating alliances.  The more intriguing twist on everyone’s mind, however, was this of the tribal leaders.

Most speculated that the two leaders were going to be responsible for drafting the starting tribes... others weren’t so sure.  But everyone agreed that whoever the tribal leaders turned out to be, they were both somehow going to be instrumental in determining the fates of the other 14 players.

Josh S. pulled some matches which he had recovered from the plane wreck and used them to start a fire.  As he lit up some kindling, he asked, "How do we want to pick our leaders?"

Luke responded, "I say we pick people who have been in alot of survivor games
before,that way they'll be able to do whatever is expected of them.  I think we should take votes here and send in the results.  I vote for Adam and Chad."

Vanessa stared at Luke in disbelief.  She shook her head, and reminded him,  "I played in over 200 games in the past 3 years."

The democratic process then continued as Aaron cast his votes for Vanessa and Adam.

Josh S. took the Thailand route.  "I will do my votes based on the two oldest here...it makes sense to me somehow lol  Brenda and Robin...you got my vote :)"

Nichole voted for Josh S and Brenda, and summarized the current votes:

2 Votes - Adam, Brenda / 1 Vote - Chad, Josh S, Robin, Vanessa

Upon seeing the front runners, Josh F. decided to succumb to peer pressure.  "I like that idea too... Brenda and Adam get my vote as well."

Jacob was a tad bit less decisive.  "This is a really important decision...maybe we should all talk about it...personally, I think that Robin and Brenda would be fine
choices, but I want to hear from everyone."

Robin smiled.  "Thanks for your votes!! I have played in tons of online games as anyone who knows me can vouch for. So many that I've actually lost count but take my word for it, it's been MANY.  I'll vote for Brenda and Jacob."

Vanessa was freaking out, wondering why she wasn’t receiving more votes.  Crossing her arms, she reiterated,  "I think i should be one of the leader because I played in more online games than anyone else I played in over 200 onlines games in the past 3 years."  The other Survivors glared at her angrily.

Adam, however, was honored that the Survivors thought that he was up to the task.  "Wow...I must say that I’m flattered to be considered....*blush* I’m fine with ebing one of the leaders...as for my votes - I’m saying Nichole and Chris."

Kyle chirped up,  "I’ll vote for Brenda and Robin. :) Good luck everyone!"

Kira was also feeling the girl power.  "My vote is for Robin and Brenda! You go girls!"  She then summarized the votes for everyone:

7 votes - Brenda / 4 votes - Robin / 3 votes - Adam / 1 vote - Chad, Josh S, Vanessa, Nichole, Chris, Jacob

Upon seeing the impressive tally next to her name, Brenda exclaimed, "Well guys I am touched with all the votes!!! If I become a leader, I dont know how well I will do with picking of the teams but I will do my best and any help would be apprecaited!!! Anyways my votes go for Aaron and Robin!!!"

Chris agreed with Luke’s original thoughts on the subject.  "Hey! I vote for Adam and Chad as tribe leaders because they seem to be the most familiar with the SOTN games!"

Meanwhile, Kevin was beginning to grow faint.  Perhaps it was because he was leaning a bit too close to the fire, but a vision of a mutant Spongebob Squarepants with Al Sharpton’s head suddenly popped into his mind.  "I am so terribly sorry!" he screamed, "I am unable to finsh/start in this game. I am having massive... trouble..."

The other players gathered around him, pleading with him not to quit.  At that moment, his head began to spin around in circles and he projectile-vomited onto the fire, extinguishing it and sending the Survivors into darkness.

Back to the tribal leader election, the results were coming clear: "8 votes - Brenda / 6 votes - Robin"

A decision having been made, Josh S. stood up, and said,  "I will gladly [give] the vote totals to [Travis]: Brenda and Robin."

With that, Josh S. walked up to Travis with the group’s official decision.  However he, and the group, were in for a bit of a surprise.

===
THE NEXT TWO TWISTS
===

Travis walked up to the group, and said, "First of all... I’ve been trying to make some calls to Zeb on my fancy-schmancy satellite cell phone.  But since the aurora is really messing up the audio, I’ve only been able to text message him.  Apparently, with our small budget, he could only afford a one-seater helicopter to come here to rescue us, and it can only fly by here every 3-5 days.  So the people who we’re going to send onto the rescue chopper will be... you’ve got it... the person who you vote out of Survivor on the Net each week.

But aside from the ridiculous and highly implausible role playing element, I’m sure that what you’re most interested in is who ended up as our two tribal leaders.

What happened was very interesting... even though you guys were voting for leaders, 6 separate people ended up approaching me with official decisions.  And they didn’t all nominate the same players as leaders.

However, flash back to what I told you before: ‘You can decide as a group however you want, but I’m going to need someone to give me an official answer as soon as possible.  The two leaders will ultimately be decided by the first person to give me an official decision.’"

So, with that being said, here are your two chosen TRIBAL LEADERS, as chosen by the first person to approach me:

Aaron & Andrew, congratulations both for being selected as the SOTN XII tribal leaders."

The tribe members looked at each other in confusion as Travis passed a glowing red crystal pendant to Andrew and a glowing blue crystal pendant to Aaron, to designate their positions as tribal leaders.  Both Aaron and Andrew were not Brenda and Robin.  Someone had obviously circumvented the democratic process and logged a decision without anyone else’s approval.

Travis continued to stand there, however, and as soon as the players stopped murmuring he continued, "Okay.  Now since we have some unusual circumstances for the beginning of this game (what with the airplane having crashed in the completely wrong location and all) it only seems fitting to add some unusual twists to go along.  I am now channeling Jeff Probst:  ‘You assume too much, weedhoppers.’

BIG, POSSIBLY SHOCKING STARTING TWIST COMING UP NOW:

We are starting the game with a merged tribe.  Welcome to Survivor on the Next XII:  Rewind.

That’s right... the game pattern has been partially reversed.  Roughly, the game is going to proceed as follows:  MERGE ---> TRIBAL SPLIT ---> MERGER."

Now everyone appeared to be very confused.  They had gone from thinking that the tribes were going to be decided that day to hearing that the game was actually going to begin with a merged tribe.

Travis came out and asked a question that was on everyone’s mind.  "Okay, so what about these TRIBAL LEADERS?  What exactly are they for?

"Well, in every episode during the first phase of the game, the 2 current tribal leaders will both have immunity."

Frowns immediately appeared on fourteen of the Survivors’ faces.  Obviously, had they known that the leaders would be immune, they all would have voted for themselves!

"HOWEVER, the tribal leaders you have chosen ARE NOT SET IN STONE by any means.  In fact, they will change in every episode depending on who wins each immunity challenge."

Ears perked up.

"The winner of each episode’s immunity challenge WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME one of the two tribal leaders.  For example, let’s pretend that the tribal leaders are person A & person B.  You are not a tribal leader, and you win the immunity challenge.  Now, in order to claim immunity, you have to kick out either person A or person B and take the place of the person you’ve removed from power.  Let’s say you decide to kick out person B.  Now, the tribal leaders are person A & you.  Person B has become a regular, non-immune Survivor.  Got it?"

Some Survivors nodded, others stared blankly.

"So you see, winning individual immunity has become a double-edged sword, because while you will be protecting yourself, you will also be making another person vulnerable who was not before.

Now, that’s great for 14 of you, but what if a tribal leader wins individual immunity?  Well, he/she is obviously safe from being replaced, however, he/she now has the option to kick out the other tribal leader and choose any of the other Survivors as a new second leader.  A decision must be posted before tribal council takes place, same deadline applies as before."

Okay... so basically, "tribal leaders" was SOTN XII’s way of saying "lucky immune people..." or was there something more to it?  Travis immediately followed, "Well, as you’ve probably already guessed, the two tribal leaders still have yet to play an important role in deciding everyone’s fate in this game.  What role will that be?  Exactly the role you thought it would be today."  With that, he smiled evilly, stuck his hands into his pockets, and walked into the Northern Lights.

===
WHO’S THE JERK?
===

The players watched Travis leave, and were left to wonder what the heck had just happened.

JOSH S: What a shock for the two leaders....
AARON: i was in shock!
JOSH S: me too
AARON: I can't believe I was selected
CHRIS: lol me too
JOSH S: thought it was Brenda and Robin for sure
JOSH S: someone already sent in the two leaders without consulting us ADAM: Whoa. I SO knew someone would do that.
LUKE: yeah someone apparently doesn't get the word diplomacy
AARON: I wonder who it was?
BRENDA: not me!! ;p;
KYLE: didn't we vote on the leader?
JOSH S: we did, but it went by the first e-mail he got
JOSH S: and the first one said Aaron and Andrew
TRAVIS(HOST): Could I play the evil host and ask who you think sent in the first official decision e-mail?
CHRIS: i have no clue!
AARON: I honestly have no clue who'd choose me
BRENDA: i have no clue
AARON: they're wacko for doing so, lol i've never actually been selected for anything
ADAM: What I think is interesting, is how there were not one but SIX of them sent in.
LUKE: yeah me too
LUKE: obviously
LUKE: josh s sent our requests
JOSH S: yea i did
JOSH S: at 6:50
LUKE: maybe some others did too
LUKE: I did also
LUKE: that's 2
BRENDA: oh I get it now
AARON: Probably one of more people in this room did so.
LUKE: that still leaves 4
ADAM: It wasn't me, I've been trying to finish this stupid essay all day..>
CHRIS: we are having "blind-siding" so early in the game lol

The players then talked about the starting with a merged tribe...

JOSH S: ok this is pretty cool starting out merged
KYLE: yeah chris, it's different starting out with the merge
AARON: When does the Tribal Split happen tho?
JOSH S: Yea, I can't wait for tribes lol
JOSH S: but starting off merged is a pretty big twist
CHRIS: i kinda like being able to talk to everyone
KYLE: Me too

===
NEAR-IMPOSSIBLE REWARD CHALLENGE
===

An hour later, Travis returned, ready to administer the first challenge.  He handed a journal to each of the Survivors, and set up 16 looms, blocks of wood, knives and bows & arrows.

"Okay, folks.  This challenge requires creativity and quickness.

The first tribe member to do the following wins:

-create a patch for the tribal quilt

-carve your own personal tribal council torch

-describe the Northern Lights, for posterity

-write up a tribal song

-hunt 100 lbs. worth of food for the tribe

Whoever submits it all first wins the reward: 35 JET POINTS & The chameleon buff.  This buff will allow you to choose which tribe you want to be on, come tribal split time.

WARNING:

PLAYERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY FURTHER CHALLENGES UNLESS THEY COMPLETE THE QUILT PATCH & TORCH (AT MINIMUM).

GO!"

The players’ mouths were gaping.  They couldn’t believe that THIS was the first challenge, and that it was going to be THIS hard.

Adam, Aaron, Chris, Josh S, Kira, Kyle and Lucus sped off, while Brenda and Nichole looked at one another, wondering where to start.  Vanessa took one look at the challenge and just shook her head.  The others suddenly began to feel the effects of frostbite and remained docile.

Adam took an early lead, with the others close behind.  The patches and torches were finished quickly... but the hunting and journaling was another matter entirely.

Soon, there were only two players in the race... Adam and Josh S.  Josh S quickly schlepped up a description of the Northern Lights, and yelled, "DONE!"

The players suspended activity while Travis walked over to check.  "Sorry, your journal is too short," he said.

Suddenly, Adam’s eyes lit up... he had a chance to win.  He took down the last few words, and was just closing his journal, when...

"I’M DONE NOW!" Josh S yelled again.  He had added enough words to his journal to make the required minimum.  Travis checked it once again and declared Josh S the winner of 35 Jet Points and the chameleon buff.

The players were shaking their heads in disbelief.  It was as if Josh S had stopped time in order to complete the challenge before the others.  They furiously strip searched him for illegal space-time altering devices, but none were found.  "Way to go, Josh," Robin said.

===
SURVIVOR NUMBER TWELVE
===

As the Survivors began to gather supplies for their shelter, they attempted to entertain themselves.

Kira danced as she sang the song she wrote for the reward challenge:

"This is Survivor number twelve.

One, two, three, four, five, everybody in the car so come on let's
ride.....
To the liquor store around the corner.
The boys say they want some gin and juice but I really don't wanna.
Beerbust like I had last week.
I must stay deep 'cause talk is cheap.
We like Aaron, Adam, Andrew, and Brenda...
And as I continue, you know they're getting sweeter.
So what can I do? I really beg you my Lord.
To me surviving is just like a sport.
Anything fly, it's all good let me dump it.
Please set it in the trumpet.

A little bit of Chad in my life,
A little bit of Luke by my side.
A little bit of Chris is all I need,
A little bit of Jacob's all I see.
A little bit of Josh F. in the sun,
A little bit of Josh S. all night long.
A little bit of Kevin here we are,
A little bit of you makes me your friend!!!!!!!!
Survivor number twelve.

Jump up and down and move it all around.
Shake your head to the sound, put your hands on the ground.
Take one step left and one step right.
One to the front and one to the side.
Clap your hands once and clap your hands twice
And if it look like this then you're doing it right.

A little bit of Kyle in my life,
A little bit of Nichole by my side.
A little bit of Robin's all I need,
A little bit of Vanessa's all I see.
A little bit of Aaron in the sun,
A little bit of Adam all night long.
A little bit of Luke, here we are,
A little bit of you makes me your friend!!!!!!!!
Trumpet, the trumpet.
Survivor number twelve ha, ha, ha

A little bit of Robin in my life,
A little bit of Jacob by my side.
A little bit of Kevin's all I need,
A little bit of Chris' all I see.
A little bit of Chad in the sun,
A little bit of Brenda all night long.
A little bit of Andrew here we are,
A little bit of you makes me your friend!!!!

I do all to play in these games with you.
Cause you can't run and you can't hide.
We are all gonna touch the sky.
Survivor number twelve."

All of the survivors applauded, except for Kevin, who found that his hands had suddenly fallen off.

As Lucus put some tree branches on the wood pile, he shook his head ominously and warned his fellow players about the nature of their location.  "Our camp is up to 600 miles above the earth's surface, we have already sseen it is cold here, and we are obviously in some kind of highly charged radioactive field, maybe the cast outs are the lucky ones. Obviously the research done was insufficent to discover this
radiation land we now have crashed in.  The land is probably unstable and may change at any time."

Someone then reminded him that they were actually on the Earth BELOW the Northern Lights.

At the end of the second day, Aaron approached the camera, and described the camp:

"Our camp is a very basic camp for being newly castaways. We have a pit for our fire, and we keep our firewood nearby. Our hut, where everyone sleeps, is made of wood, String and other variety of things that we found around the area. The northern lights provide light for the nightime and a very eerie effect for the castaways, Did you know that The northern lights are also called the Aurora polaris, and that Aurora is latin for Dawn. The northern lights are very nice for the castaways to look at because it is called the natures most beautiful night show and is very pretty and entertaining. It is also interferes with castaways minds and thoughts however because protons and electrons carried by solar winds hit parts of the the earths atomosphere, which is said to effect different people in different ways. The northern lights however are sometimes not as good to the castaways because in science it is believed that Northern Lights interfere with the brainwaves, and depending on Zodiac signs can effect emotional and physical behavior."

The brain wave interference was becoming increasingly apparent with Kevin, who was now attempting to walk upside-down.

===
FIRST TRIP TO CHALLENGE CIRCLE
===

On day 3, the castaways found a tree mail message asking them to hike up to challenge circle.

It turned out that challenge circle was actually just a circle drawn with a crayon onto a big piece of cardboard.

"Welcome, Survivors," Travis said, "time for your first immunity challenge.  In every game I host, one of the first challenges is somehow trivia-related.  It’s a tradition.  You love trivia or you hate it, but hopefully this will be on a topic which you all know a little bit about... another version of Survivor which is done by this quaint little company called CBS.

This isn’t going to be simple, however.  In each round, I’ll start by asking a toss-up question.  First player to get it right becomes the ‘captain.’

The captain then selects two of the other players in the game to go head-to-head in a trivia death match.  A harder question about Survivor will be asked... the first of these two to answer correctly stays in the game, and the other is out.  If both players get the question wrong, both are out.

Last player in the game wins, simple as that.  Ready?"

"START!!!" Chris yelled.  Travis stared at Vanessa, who stared back at Travis, wondering what the hold up was.

"Vanessa, where’s your quilt patch and torch?" Travis asked, "I told everyone that they couldn’t participate in future challenges unless they did a quilt and torch."

Luke agreed, "not fair to wiat for those who were active enough to do on time"

Vanessa sat there for a few seconds, then sheepishly walked back to camp.

"Okay, here we go!" Travis said, "First question... Who was the runner-up of Survivor Season 1?"

"Kelly!" Luke yelled.  He became the first captain, and chose Kyle and Andrew to death match.

"What was the name of the only Survivor to leave the game on an injury?"  Travis asked.

"Mike Skupin," Andrew said quickly.  Kyle, dejected, slumped back to camp to join Vanessa.

"He didn’t have to go," Travis mumbled, "oh well."

Josh S. won the next toss-up and chose Andrew and Robin to face off.

"Which Survivor from Season 1 was made infamous for voting alphabetically?"

"Sean," Andrew said, before giving Robin a chance to speak.

Luke whistled, and said, "Wow! Andrew, smoking."

The next toss-up went to Aaron.  He chose Lucus to go to the face off... and Andrew.  Andrew quickly shamed Luke.

Finally, Andrew won a toss-up question of his own, and nominated Aaron and Josh S to face off.  "What is the name of the first Survivor to be booted by lottery?" Travis asked.

"Uh.. Cho Mamma??" Aaron offered, and got the big buzzer.

"Jeff," Josh S guessed.  Wrong again... they were both out, the answer was, of course, Paschal from Season 4.

Chris grabbed the next toss up question, and nominated Kira to go up against contract killer Andrew, but just as Andrew was going to stab Kira to death and bury her body under the snow (figuratively, of course) Kevin ran into challenge circle and began to attack Travis.

"God, NO!"  Travis yelled, "I'M BEING STRANGLED!"

The tribe members showed an appalling lack of care for Travis as he was being kicked in the gut by the deranged Kevin.  Finally, Travis just took off in the opposite direction and hid behind a small mountain.  When he felt that he had lost Kevin, Travis shot a signal flare up into the sky.  The players grudgingly made their way to Travis, who was laying in the snow, bleeding and half-naked.

"That has never happened before," Travis said, attempting to move his leg.  "You think you’ve planned a quick little fun immunity challenge, and then THIS happens.  Let’s just finish the face off."

Andrew unceremoniously disposed of Kira.  Then came the next question:  What was the first season in which the jury vote was not 4-3?

"6," said Andrew, confidently.

"No," said Travis, confidently.

"1," offered Chris.

"Also no," offered Travis.

"5," guessed Nichole.

"HECK NO," said Travis, becoming frustrated.

Brenda, becoming frightened at the glowing red flames emitting from Travis’s eyeballs, whispered, "2."

"NO!!!!  NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!" Travis screamed, weakly moving his forefinger with each NO, "HOW DARE YOU RUIN AN INJURED MAN’S IMMUNITY CHALLENGE?"

Travis used his remaining good arm to fish out a new question card.  "Okay, punks, let’s see how you do with this.  "In which season were the players initially divided into one tribe of men and one tribe of women?"

Andrew immediately answered "6," and chose Chris and Nichole to face off.  Chris answered first, sending Nichole on the walk of shame.

Finally, three players were left:  Andrew, Brenda and Chris.  Brenda and Chris stared at one another nervously, afraid to face off against the Survivor trivia wiz.

"Who was the winner of Survivor 5?"

"Brian," said Andrew, filing his fingernails.  The sudden death question would go to Brenda and Chris.

"Which Season 5 Survivor made excessive use of the word ‘disingenuous?’" Travis asked.  Brenda and Chris stared at one another blankly.

"John?" guessed Brenda.

"Sorry," said Travis.

"Clay?" guessed Chris.

"Unfortunately, no," said Travis, "the answer was Ghandia... you know, during the whole ‘grinding’ incident.  Brenda and Chris are both eliminated, and that means that Andrew is the winner!"  Several players applauded Andrew’s victory.  "Since you are already a tribal leader, the question is, are you going to replace yourself or Aaron with someone else from the tribe?"

Andrew thought for a moment, and said, "I'll say boot Aaron and put in Brenda.  Let's put it back to how we voted... sorry, Aaron.."

Aaron took the blue pendant off of his neck and handed it to Brenda.  "Okay, then it's decided, the leaders are now ANDREW and BRENDA!" Travis said, "They will both be immune at tribal council tomorrow.  Get a good night’s sleep, all."

The survivors took the long hike back to camp after the longer than expected immunity challenge, and found that Vanessa had just finished her quilt patch, but had yet to carve a torch.

Meanwhile, Kevin had eaten his block of carving wood, and was coughing up sawdust.

===
A SHOCKING TRIBAL COUNCIL!
===

The next day, the survivors gathered at the tribal council area.

Travis rolled up in his wheelchair to greet them.  "In the wilderness, fire represents life.  Here, fire will represent your life in this game.  Dip your torch into the fire.  Get fire.  Good."

At this point, Kevin whipped a rapier out from behind his back, and pointed it straight at Travis.  Always prepared, Travis pulled a rapier out from behind the tribal council podium, hopped up from behind his wheelchair and began to duel with Kevin.  The other survivors hit the deck as Kevin and Travis went into full out marshal combat, spinning and slashing with intent to kill.  Suddenly, Kevin tripped into the fire pit and was set ablaze, the smell of burning human flesh permeating throughout the tribal council area.

"Well then," Travis said, "Aaron, you’re the first to vote."

After the survivors had all voted, Travis grabbed the vote urn and began to read the votes.

"First vote... Kevin.

Second vote... Kevin.

Third vote... Kevin.

Fourth through ninth votes... Kevin.

Kevin, with nine votes, you are the weakest survivor, goodbye."

The helicopter touched down at the landing pad at that moment.  The survivors helped to load Kevin’s charred body inside.  The chopper lifted off and began speeding away... but unfortunately Kevin’s harness was not fastened tight enough, causing him to fall out of the chopper and into the mountains, where he was lost forever.
