Meadow Garden


Meadow Garden on Independence Drive, Augusta, Georgia, was the home of George Walton, one of three signers of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia.


George Walton, who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence and who twice served as Governor of Georgia was buried in Augusta at Signers Monument. Walton was born in Virginia in 1749 and raised by an uncle.

He served as acting commander of State Militia and was a Prisoner of War (1778-79).  He was also a Member of the Council of Safety and of the 1776 Continental Congress.  Walton served as Chief Justice of GA and was a U.S. Senator (1795-1796).

A visit to Meadow Garden includes a tour of 1790-1804 house, showing period furnishings and Walton family memorabilia, as well as tours of the 1700 Medicinal Herb Garden and Kitchen Garden, and plantings of flowers, fruits, and shrubbery of the period.

A slide presentation of the house and grounds in available through the State Program Chairman, and speakers are available from the Meadow Garden Board.

The house is open 10 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday and by appointment at other times. Group rates available for over ten people. The Meadow Garden Board encourages every chapter to promote interest in Meadow Garden with programs and visits since Meadow Garden is a state honor roll project.
