Short summary:
Almost twenty years ago, while Sakaki (Giovanni) was still a young man, Rocketto Dan (that is, Team Rocket,) was under the leadership of a dynamic, career-minded woman identified only as ‘Woman Boss’. (The fan-given name ‘Madame Boss’ has become very common, though) the Woman Boss was dedicated to her job, and to earning a great deal of money.
Years later, after Sakaki inhereted leadership of Team Rocket from his mother the story of the Phantom came to his attention. A small fossil was found in an excavation site in the deep jungle, near the foot of the Andes Mountain range. The tiny fossil was a perfectly preserved Mew’s eyebrow. Sakaki hired the genius scientist, Doctor Fuji, to attempt the cloning of Mew.
Doctor Fuji was an older gentleman, but the leading scientist in the field of cloning. He had become obsessed with the secret of life after the death of his daughter, Ai. The child had been killed in a car accident. His obsession with reproducing his only child had driven his wife away and left him with nothing but the memories of his family, and his small basement laboratory. He was a sad, lonely old man.
Doctor Fuji accepted the job, even though it meant working with a criminal organisation. Sakaki’s offer of the latest scientific equipment and facilities meant that Fuji had a much greater of succesfully cloning his little girl.
Ten long years went into his experiments. They were quite succesful, for the first in their fields. He was able to create and enhance Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Meowth and Pikachu. Unfortunately, these clones did not last very long, and withered inside their artificial wombs before ever being ‘born’. Despite setbacks, Fuji’s obsession grew. Before too long, he had created an infant from Ai’s DNA. The baby, too, was kept within the glass tubes used to clone the pokémon. It was not too long after Ai-two came into being that Sakaki approached doctor Fuji with the mew fossil. His request was that Fuji reconstruct the animal using its genetic imprints. Because Mew had not been seen for hundreds of years, this involved a lot of guesswork, but by the time the planning, computer simulations and careful retooling were done, only a month had passed.
An unexpected turn of events occurred. Ai Two, her mind coming into contact with the dormant, psychic mind of her fellow clone, attempted to make friends with him. Confused and frightened by his sudden awakening into the darkness, Mew Two was grateful for her presence. The little girl immediately took the frightened kitten under her wing, so to speak, agreeing that she would be his friend, and teach him all she knew. This included counting, speaking, and knowledge about the world outside their tanks.
Finally, after long years, Mewtwo’s mind cleared. Now an adult, and still contained within the artificial womb of glass and cultivating fluid, he awoke. Confused and angry, he lashed out at his creators. His anger was unfocused, rooted in their treatment of him as an object to be used as they saw fit, and for the heartless way they had spoken of clones as sub-human. The lab was destroyed. The scientists were killed… and Mew Two…felt only insecurity. To himself he demanded to know if he truly was stronger than his ‘parent’, Mew.
Sakaki preyed on that insecurity, promising the creature power, a purpose, and a life if he did as was asked of him. Unwilling to show uncertainty, Mew Two agreed to come with the leader of the Rocketto Dan. For a full year, he did as was commanded, attacking Pokémon and their trainers alike, and luring wild Pokémon to the Dan’in (That is, the black suited low ranking members of Team Rocket). Late one evening, Mew Two quietly spokek aloud to himself, asking if his life had any purpose or worth at all. Sakaki overheard, and walked into the laboratory, laughing.
“Your purpose is to serve your master. Outside of that, your life has no worth.”
Enraged by the cruelty of this comment, Mew Two destroyed the Viridian Rocket base and escaped into the skies, leaving Sakaki and his Persian alive, but not much else.
“Humans are filth, not even worth being put into garbage cans. They brag of strength they do not have. They prey on the weak and have nothing but greed in their hearts. Why should they be the ruling species of this world? Why shouldn’t I tell them what to do? No…This is not a declaration of war, nor is it an attack, but rather, my counterattack on those who brought me unwilling and alone into this world! I will be the worlds most powerful Pokémon, I will make them pay… the reign of Mew Two will soon commence!”
