Islamic Studies - What is Islam

Salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah (welcome).

We would like to take this time to thank Allah for guiding you to our page, and most of all, guiding you to the straight path, the Path of success ....al-Islam.

We would like to welcome you into the Sisterhood & Brotherhood of Islam. ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root "SALEMA": peace, purity, submission and obedience.

In the religious sense, Islam means submission to the will of God and obedience to His law. Salam may also mean greeting one another with peace. One of the beautiful names of God is that He is the Peace. It means more than that: submission to the One God, and to live in peace with the Creator, within one's self, with other people and with the environment. Thus, Islam is a total system of living. A Muslim is supposed to live in peace and harmony with all these segments; hence, a Muslim is any person anywhere in the world whose obedience, allegiance, and loyalty are to God, the Lord of the Universe.

It is not a fanatic religion, though sometimes you will come across examples of people who profess to be practicing Islam, who use extreme measures to enforce their beliefs on others.

Quran teaches us that there is no compulsion in religion. In

Surah 2: 256 we read; Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from error; whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

This fact is often ignored by those wishing to blanket their own agenda under the deguise of religion.

As you advance, insha Allah, in your understanding of Islam, you will understand more fully, insha Allah, the middle ground that Islam follows.

Islam is a religion of both the mind and the heart.
