I served on the Waddell from Sept. 1970 to Sept. 1972 or thereabouts, including a WESTPAC cruise. Like most destroyers, we alternated between gunline, plane guard, and communications duties off of Vietnam. We also made a strange side trip to Ethiopia.

I was a Radioman 3rd Class onboard USS Waddell from 1978 to 1982. I live in Orlando, FL. now, and it would be great to hear from anyone I knew during that time. I had some real good friends that I would like to find. (send Email)
I can't believe it. I remenber those parties in Bremerton. I was a RM3 on the Waddell from 79 to 82. Those were some great years. I made two WestPac's, one before we went to Bremerton in 79I think it was, and one after in 81. Oh man...Subic Bay...enough said. And Pattaya Beach..yeaaaa...that place was outstanding. All the Stereo equipment I bought in Sasebo still works great. Damn, that was almost 20 years ago. I was thinking about those day, and how cool it would be to get in touch with some of my friends, like PC2 Bruce Adams, QM3 Steve Starr, PCSN Lyle Novotny, RMSN Charlie "Okie" Rankin, QM3 Jim Newman...remember the time at that place in Pusan, Korea Jim..haaaaa. And OS2 Demarsico, OS3 Edwards, EW2 Quimayousie, RM3 Tim Ellis...I could go on forever. If any of you guys ever read this, Email me ok. I am originally from Albuquerque, N.M. When I got out of the Navy, I moved back to Albuquerque, and got a job with Mountain Bell. That was 17 years ago, and many changes. (AT&T now, since the breakup in 84)

I served on her in 1969-70 or so (I'll check my records and repost the exact dates). Was curious what happened to the old girl and searched the net for her. I was fameous for the "crow" on my ammo loading party dungarhauls... it was an eagle carrying a 5" projectile. Got in trouble for that more than once. Remember; dont be last, or you get the MAGAZINE! Now days, I work for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in Valdez where I repair and maintain the Computers and data systems used to control the pipeline. I've been doing this since 1977. It's a good living, and Valdez is a real nice place to live and raise a family.

I was an STG2 and served on the Waddell from Nov. '73 until I left the Navy in July 1975. We made one WestPac cruise during the period including a visit to NewCastle and Melbourne, Australia. I previously served on the U.S.S. Rowan DD-782 from Oct. 71 to Oct. 73 and on the U.S.S. Chevalier, DD-805 for a short while after having completed "C" School at the ASW base in San Diego. I volunteered to transfer to the Rowan at it was to be a two year stint homeported out f Yokosuka, Japan. According to the propaganda, we were going to spend the entire two years visiting all the ports in the Western Pacific. ; ) What really happened is that we spent 15 months on the gunline in Viet-Nam. : (

Served aboard the Warship 1977-1980. Maintained the GOLD E on the 5"54. WestPac and ModLoc. Overhaul in Bremerton, WA. Picked the "Mudrunner" out of the gutter in the PI and caught the clap three times and survived. Lived at the Fillmore for the best kegger parties ever. Got the hell out of the Nav and stayed in Seattle. Got married, had kids and still rock'n'rolling. Hey Schnepf, Red, Rosy and go to hell Moyer. To all the MAA's, you never found our stash and we made a fortune. The stereo system I bought in the PI still works great and I'm glad the Greeks are gonna burn up like a flare in a can rather than our brothers that are sailing now.

I served on the Warship from Oct 77 through Dec 80 as an FTG. I fondly remember FT Chief Wolfe, a soft spoken mountain of a man. I remember a bunch of us FTs helped him once at his house in San Diego and he treated us to an afternoon in his pool and a steak barbecue. I was sad when he left. He was one of the few people up the chain of command whom I really respected. His replacement was about as worthless as tits on a bull. Nevertheless, G Division plodded on and when I left, we had a gold E and two hash marks. It was a mixed blessing being on a ship where all the systems worked to their potential. On the one hand I was proud to be part of such an effective and professional crew, but every time the dirty jobs came along, we got the call. I remember leaving for Westpac 78-79 with an impressive list of ports we were to hit. When it was time to go to the Persian Gulf on short notice we went steaming in the middle of nowhere for 3 months, eating roast beef 3 times a day and going on "water hours" while the Hoel, a worthless damn rustbucket, actually got towed to all our ports. I was one of the "Grande Island Four" who got busted for smoking pot at the Admiral's party... big mistake. Lost my crow, lost $250, and spent 40 days scrubbing deck plates with "bug juice" from the mess decks. Could have done without that! Went on some major drunks while on Westpac, fell a few times in Hawaii, Subic, out and continued to play clubs for a few years. In '83 the band split and everyone went their separate ways. I moved to California for a few years, Golby got married, I married his wife's sister and moved back to Seattle, Spencer went home to Chicago, came back and got married. Now we all have kids and live within 2 miles of each other. GMG2 Randy Osborne is a little further south by Centralia , WA. After a serious bout with cancer, he is healthy and full of his usual piss and vinegar. We go to his 40-acre place every 4th of July, fire up the band, camp out with our families and reminisce about our glory days on the Waddell. (We don't tell our wives any of the stories about Subic Bay and Olongapo... we all want to stay married.) I didn't like a lot about the Navy, but I wouldn't trade those 4 years for anything in the world. So here I sit about to turn 40 in a few months with a good job, a great wife, three boys (11, 8, & 3), and a brand new baby daughter. Life is pretty good.
Tommy L Hudson

My brother,( Tommy L Hudson) served on the waddell from 68-70. He is not computer friendly, (yet) however, I feel he would be if he was contacted via snail-mail telling of you great website. I have been trying to obtain a good color photo for him to put up in his home. He is a shipshape sailor and would appreciate any info you could send him about his old ship. Thank you.
(PS) I was in the GLakes as student and then staff at OSA school 72-74. I enjoyed your site and will tell others about it. Lonny

I served on the Waddell from Aug 89 to Mar 91. I reported on board as a seaman in 1st division, later struck Quartermaster, and left as a QM3. I still consider it a priviledge to have served with those guys and always will. If anyone that served with me wants to contact me I would like that.

I was aboard the ship from Oct. 1976 thru may 1980. I was a boiler tech. second class. The last year and a half I was the asst. oil king. Most of the snipes used to call me "large". I was fortunate to go on the cruise ship Waddell on two west-pacs. If anybody is out there, and still remembers me drop a line or two. I would really like to hear from the old crew. Hello Shakey-Ba@#%*&.

I served in the "Wadoobe" during her last year of life as "M" Division LCPO. Made the final Central American/Jamaica cruise then spent three weeks training the Greeks after she became the H/S Nearchos. Last of the true greyhounds - sad to see her go.
Levi Starks

I served on the Warship from 1978 thru 1981 I had a great time, but didn't know it at the time. Haven't seen any other post's from ET's would like to know what happened to Todd Url, Steve Billiau, and the rest of those "OE" partiers. OH yes and Tom Jones (no not "the" Tom Jones) EW2 Tom Jones he Didn't party much, he was "saving himself to be a Lawyer. I wonder if he ever did. We had a great division officer for the first 2 years, Enisgn LDO Estrada, or as he was know behind his back Ensanada Estrada. And who could forget the Operations officer, I can't remember his name, only that he bore a close resemblence to a certain cartoon character who was always hunting rabbits. And of course who could forget the time in Bremerton when we spent 3days at some Marine boyscout camp qualifying on the M-14 and it was Cold!!!. I can't forget to mention ET1 Dave Fucito- There are Lifers, and there are Lifers. Nuff said. And to ETC Burton if you happen across this please accept my appoligies for the grief that I'm sure I caused you those years. Just one more thing. About those boxes of chocolate that came up missing after the helo detail in the Indian Ocean--Well I know what happened to them. Thanks for some pleasant memories.

I joined the crew in Yokusuka, Japan where the Waddell was home ported in early 70 and stayed with her thru overhaul at Hunters Point and two more Westpac tours, went to Africa (Ethiopia) and was lifted off the fantail to a helo, to a carrier to the Philippines and home sweet home in summer 73. Was a MM2 in forward engine room. Hated the Navy when I left but today I wouldn't trade those four years for anything. Would love to hear from some of the crew in those Viet Nam era days.

I served as gunnery officer from August, 1970 until September, 1972. I am now working in Birmingham as Vice President and CFO of a Southern Coil Processing, a steel processing company. I have a lot of good memories from my few years in the navy and aboard the "Wonderful Waddell". The last I knew anything about the Waddell before she was stricken from the list of active ships was while working for a plastics manufacturer in the Birmingham area. The company made plastic mugs for the advertising specialty industry and would also do custom printing on the mugs. One day while reviewing completed orders I came across an order for the Waddell. From February through May 1971 the Waddell was in the ship yard at Hunter's Point. During that time my wife, Claire made an embroidery of the ship's crest and presented it to the wardroom. Does any know what happened to it after the ship was sold to Greece? I would like to hear from anyone who was on the ship during the 8/70 - 9/72 timeframe. The only officer I've kept contact with has been Kraig Kennedy.

I served on the Warship from 1976-1979 as First Division Officer and ASW Officer. I want to report on the untimely death from cancer of STGCS Al McIntosh on October 25, 1999 in Reno, Nevada at the age of 53. Senior Chief McIntosh reported aboard the Warship in 1973 or 1974 as an STG 1. He departed as an STGC in September, 1978. He served as the F2 Division's LPO and later LCPO during my tenure as ASWO (1977-1979). Senior Chief McIntosh was an old Navy, no nonsense sailor who looked after his men, got the job done, was a straight shooter, took no crap off of anyone, and was the type of person you could trust with your life. What more can you say about a shipmate? I ran into him this past August when he found himself in a battle with stomach cancer and he hadn't changed a bit. Still the fighter. Steven L. Hull, LTJG, Warship Waddell, 1976-1979.
Ric Rainey

I would like to be added to your list of crew members post 1968 of the Warship Waddell. My name is Ric Rainey, I live in Australia and I served onboard from 1982-1987 as a MM1 in #1 Engine room (Main Control). I rode her through 2 Westpacs which included her first stint in the Persian gulf before much happened and I served aboard as she went through her overhaul in Long Beach. I've visited your site and have found a few names that I recognize.

My name is Dan Marshall (MM2). I served on board the Waddell from 1/84 until 8/88. I was in M-Division and worked primarily in the after engine room. I would like to hear from anyone that served on the warship and especially those interested in a re-union. I could not find a way to enter my name on the crew list but that may be due to my computer skills or lack there of, please help if able.

Stumbled across your page the and started reading some of the comments from the crewmembers. I was onboard from June 78 to June 80 and while ther were quite a few days I really didn't like, I have to say that the Waddell and her crew was one of the best that there was. I picked up EW1 while on there and retired in 95 as EWC. Christ, some of the memories from the cruising and the partying. I think that we all must have been completely nuts. I keep in touch with John Moline but he is the only one from the ship that I know about. It was fun.

I served on the Waddell in Dec74 to March 76. As a deck ape. Some may remember me in the paint locker in the Long Beach yard during overall. I served on her from 1969 to 1971. I was an Electricians mate. Served in WestPac until she came back to the States to go to the ship yards. I was discharged then. I've always wondered if she got the "GOLD" "E". Somebody tell me!! A lot of fond memories. Hi to any of my shipmates. Greetings after all of these years! I was stationed on the Warship from March '77 to August '81. I arrived as an EW3 and left as an EW1. My fondest memories are of the people I served with on the ship. I would like to hook up with the old "OE" division. Hopefully some of the shipmates will see this web page as I did. During my stay on the Waddell, I was on two and a half WestPacs and a yard stay in Bremerton. I'm currently working in the Detroit, Michigan area and traveling for my company. The irony of that is I'm going back on business some of the places the Waddell visited years ago. Things change and stay the same all at once. I ran across a write up of the Persian Gulf/Iran operation the Waddell did. It seemed weird to read about the Waddell in an old Navy history book and remember the book was talking about when I was on the ship. This web page is a trip down memory lane. I received an invitation from Chief Steve Billiau for rnia. So I have a good idea of his whereabouts (he is currently moving home). Has anyone heard from Mark Campbell or Shane Hammond? Keep in touch.

Had a great time aboard, especially the WestPac, Rose Festival and San Francisco runs. Had some wonderful guys in my division, GMT1 Don McKinney, STG2 Kim Scoles, STGSN Dennis Burch. Drop a line sometime.

I was stationed on the Waddell from 91, "till we gave it away".(MM3/eng/a-div). I volunteered to train the Greeks for 6mo following the decommissioning, needless to say they were not very interested in our help. I believe there was 10 of us who stayed behind to turnover the Waddell, Berkeley, and the Strauss, including CDR. McGalliard (former Waddell CO). We deployed with them several times, "not a good experience" with the exception of the bar they built out of the A-Div berthing. The good side of all that is that I managed to spare one of the ships history logs which is about 4 inches thick and full of info/pictures from commishioning through the Veitnam era. Most of the other logs were thrown in the dumpster.

I was onboard the warship from 81-83. I became a shellback on my first cruise in 81 then had a wog dog on my second cruise, (Mike Childs). I remember the good times in Subic city at the sweet 16 and out on that pier down the street with Bob Danawitz, Stuart Anderson, Todd Hatfield, Randy Grimm, Chuck ?, Mike Childs, Ken Hamilton, Kenny Armenta, Dennis Young, J.C. Skager, Craig Ginestra, Lyle ?, Joel Finley, Eric Eckenrode, Charlie Rankin and many others who's names I cant remember. After all its been almost 20 years. I have been a hunting and fishing guide in Alaska and Washington state for the last 10 years. Making a living at what I love to do. It doesn't get any better than that!!!  If any old shipmates see this please feel free to email me, I also have ICQ 56712362.  Hope to hear from you soon.

served aboard from Dec1980-Dec 1985. I was known as OS2 Harp. Many great and some not so great memories of those years. Occassionally I review the Cruisebooks from those years, as the memory can quickly fade. I transferred in 1985 to general shore duty at Great Lakes Naval Station in illinois and in 1988 transferred back to sea to serve aboard the USS Anchorage (LSD-36) and served there until March 1993 at which point I was Honorably Discharged at the rank of E-6 (OS1) after a 13 year career which ended as a result of downsizing. No thanks to Prez Billie C and his policies. There is life after the military but I will in no way hesitate to say that there is no life that compares to that of a USN sailor's life.

I was on the Waddell from 85 to 89 and worked down in gunplot on the digital upgrade MK 68 GFCS. Was there for 2 West Pacs and the cruise up to Alaska. Had some good times and made some good friends on there. Great Webpage, I think it's a great way for former shipmates to stay in touch. Since that time I've been stationed at SIMA, precommed the USS Boxer (LHD-4) and am currently stationed at Afloat Training Group. If anyone is out there who was on the Waddell with me, drop me a line.

I served aboard the Waddell from Nov. 1966 through most of 1968. I reported aboard as an ICFN and advanced in rank to IC2 before being transferred to the USS King DLG-10. I noticed name in bold print on the crew list page could be contacted. How can I have my listing changed to bold print and update information obout me? Have anyone thought about a reunion. I have some time and would help to organize one. Contact me via e-mail at BrewerWeld@aol.com orwrtie to: Bill Brewer 13070 Triadelphia Rd. I later transferred to A-Division and was the primary Duty A-Gang underway. I could be found many nights doing steering checks in After Steering. Please add me to the list of crew members after 68. I was OPS from 83-84. On my first boarding party in the Gulf WESTPAC 84, quite a few since then. I'm a Captain, still on Active Duty. Was in Subic in 95. Most of the bars were gone, the base was a tourist resort complete with a bungie jumping ride off a pier crane at Alava Wharf. Great to see some names from the past on the website that brought back some fond memories. Not sure if was remembering the old Navy or a younger me. In any case, always good to hear from old shipmates.
