Ship's mission
The basic mission of a DDG is to operate offensively with the strike
forces, with hunter-killer groups, in support of amphibious assault
operations, and to screen support forces and convoys against submarines,
aircraft, and surface threats. To accomplish this mission a DDG must be able
to perform the following functions:
1. Detect, identify, track, and acquire air targets in cooperation with
other forces or self -contained anti-air weapon systems; then engage these
targets using controlled Combat Air Patrol or surface-to-air armament.
2. Against submarines, in cooperation with other forces possibly controlling
anti-submarine aircraft, DDG's must detect, locate, classify track
submarines before attacking with anti-submarine weapons.
Defensively, DDG's conduct barrier and patrol operations in support of
convoys and either disengage, evade, or avoid submarine attack.
3. Opposing surface threats in cooperation with other forces, a DDG must
detect, identify, track and acquire the targets with anti-surface weapon
systems prior to engaging. Besides conducting Naval Gunfire Support, a
large mission is to defend against convert attacks.
4. The mobility of DDG's is paramount to completing these three
aforementioned items. Casualty control, damage control, capability to
steam as designed, maneuver in formation, replenish at sea, seamanship,
and navigation comprise the facets of mobility.
5. As a designated flagship, certain criteria must be met. Besides having
to gather, display, evaluate and disseminate surface, sub-surface and air
intelligence; the ship must coordinate and control the operations of the
unit, task organization or unified forces to carry out the assigned missions,
tasks, and functions.
6. As a part of a large fleet, DDG's must function as towing, salvage and
rescue platforms as well as be able to transfer and receive either cargo or
personnel from other vessels.
7. In miscellaneous areas, DDG's may act as platforms for emergency
assistance; disaster evacuation; meteorological, hydrographic or
oceanographic surveys; underwater research; search sod rescue, and space
vehicle recovery.
