Students from four O.C. schools envision settlements in a design competition. by Gary Krino

They have names such as Hydrocity, Utopia and Second City.
The zoo animals have been genetically engineered, cars run on electromagnets, and neighborhood-wide sprinkler systems help control wildfires. Greenhouses grow food atop skyscrapers. Bed and breakfasts offer bungee jumping.
These cities of the futrue were envisioned by 48 students from 16 Southern California middle and intermediate schools - including four Orange County - who participated Saturday in the fifth annual National Engineers Week Future City competition at Knott’s Berry Farm.
The students used computers to construct the cities, then made three-dimensional models to show how the cities work, with special attention paid to pollution and natural-disaster control.
“Building the city on the computer was the most interesting part for me,” said Michael Caputo, 13, an eighth-grader who competed for Bernardo Yorba Middle School in Yorba Linda.
Students also said they learned that building cities on, say Mars, requires funding, and that’s spelled t-a-x-e-s.
But, said Ryan Maes, 13, an eighth-grader on the Bernardo Yorba team, “We kept taxes low. If we raised them 1 percent, everyone would move out.”
The program gives students a look at the upside of careers in engineering and city planning, said Susan Gillaspie, a member of the competition committee.
“Kids are told that math and science are hard and boring,” she said, “we let them know that they are fun and can pay off.”
The winner, Ernest Lawrence Middle School in Chatsworth, will try for the national title.
