edition of Couture Central, the men and women who are
considered the forefront of cutting edge designs will be
honoured. Modernists? They are designers who believe in looking ahead into the future, who get their inspirations not from backdated art pieces or from old movies but from what lies ahead. These designers are not afraid to experiment (unlike the minimalists like Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani or Narciso Rodriguez), neither do they believe in playing it pretty all the time (like John Galliano or Prada). They seek to redefine fashion and without them, fashion would just be a huge system of recycled ideas. They are innovative and often set the trend for other designers to follow. Who can forget Rei Kawakubo (Commes des Garcons) and her attempts to redefine the contours of the human body. Helmut Lang's mix of bold neon plastic bands across leather pants or coats, and Ann Demeulemeester's internal ties and asymmetrical pieces have created fashion history. |
