FANNIE E. McWHORTER DAVIS

[Davis]

Fannie E. McWhorter was born in 1899 near Denton, Texas. She was the 10th child born to Perry and Polly Estridge McWhorter. The couple had three more daughters after Fannie. At an early age, she moved with her family to Throckmorton County, TX. Fannie remembers them making the trip by covered wagon and making several stops along the way. The family later moved to Baylor County then on to Plains, TX.

On December 30, 1917, she married Mason O. Davis. The young couple decided to make farming their life. For them, this was a godsend since their family soon grew to include five sons and one daughter. Luckily, Fannie was an excellent homemaker and was a miracle worker when it came to stretching a meal. Fannie says "We managed somehow. We got by."

In 1926, the Davis' moved to a farm near Lockney, TX. They lived in the area until Mason's death in 1977. Fannie continued to live in Lockney in her home until 1990, when she moved to Hale Center, TX. to live with her daughter Katharyn. She lived there until her physical condition made it necessary to move to a nursing home.

Fannie's faith in God has been an integral part of her life. She has been a faithful member of several congregations of the Church of Christ in the Plainview area. In her leisure time, she loved to do handwork and play dominoes. Currently, she is considered the resident expert on dominoes at the nursing home, since she has beat nearly everyone there.
