Introduction

Welcome to my activities page! The following activities are to help students taking the IEP 0640 course at Georgia State University work through chapter 2 of the textbook: Looking Ahead 3 (Byleen, 1998). If you want to try out the activities below, read the information about the activities in the right column, and it will help you have ideas of what the activities are about.

GRAMMAR+

 

   
1. Modal I   This exercise is intended to enhance your understanding of modal use, which can be used depending on shades of meaning.
2. Modal II   This modal matching exercise is intended to help apply your previous knowledge of modal use to academic text examples. 
3. Modal III   This exercise is to help you be aware of the right order of a sentence including modal auxiliary.
4. Sentence Types   In your academic work, you will be expected to use four basic sentence types: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. This exercise is intended to inform you of the four different types of sentences and their use in academic writing.
5. Conditionals   This gives you a chance to think of conditional sentences in depth. If you would like to find some information about conditionals, you may want to take a closer look at the page245 of Looking Ahead.
6. Working with Important Terms   You've already met several terms used in this chapter that may not be familiar with you. This exercise is intended to help you memorize such terms since they are important in chapter 2 in order for you to have in-depth understanding of the chapter.
7. Working on Article   Even though you are an advanced student, you may make mistakes or errors on article use. This exercise is designed for you to practice on it. 
8. Working on Preposition   You may have a hard time dealing with prepositions. This exercise is intended to have you practice on preposition use.
9. Steps for Writing Clear Instructions   Before you start writing, you need to be aware of the important steps for writing clear instructions, which is emphasized in chapter 2 of Looking Ahead.

VOCABULARY

 

10. Word Family I   This exercise is to help you enlarge your vocabulary knowledge by working with the word family of "Instruct".
11. Word Family II   This word family II exercise is also intended to enlarge your vocabulary by working with the word family of "Revise".
12. Word Family III   You will also practice your previous knowledge of vocabulary in this exercise and be working with word family of "Emphasis".
13. Text Vocabulary I   This exercise is intended to help you understand reading 2 in depth: Preventing Disaster through working with some computer-related terms.
14. Text Vocabulary II   This exercise is to help you guess meanings of some academic words used in the reading of "Evaluating Sources". Since students are expected to guess meanings from context, it will be useful for them to practice this type of guessing exercise. 
15. Idioms   You will be working on some idioms which are frequently used in conversations. If you go back to pages from 42 to 43, you will find some differences between spoken and written language. Just try it out for your further knowledge!
