October 2004 - 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin -Spring Hill, TN Several members of the Capt. James Madison Sparkman Chapter (CJMSC) of the UDC and their families set up an 1860s Civilian Camp at the Battle of Franklin. This camp consisted of 6 tents with a period mourning display. More than 1,000 schoolchildren from Maury, Williamson, Giles and various other counties were educated on 1860s civilian life. We had 6 stations set up and spoke to the children about everything from cooking to mourning customs in the 1860s.

Photo above: Reenacting is a family affair for CJMSC UDC members. These young fiddlers are the sons of Capt. Sparkman members. They are playing period music throughout the camp at the 2004 Battle of Franklin Reenactment Civilian Camp area. The girls helped the ladies with the various demonstrations.

Battle of 3 Rivers Reenactment held in 2001 - Chapter members and their families attend reenactments & living history events regularly.  Members such as those pictured above, portray  1860s civilians.  At events, they do a variety of period demonstrations that aim to educate the public on what life was like for a displaced family during the War Between the States. Reenacting is an ongoing learning experience, it's hard work, but it's also great fun.
