OICW
Back to Assault Rifles page
Although I doubt that the SAS will ever use the OICW, due to its size and need for extreme supplies (Batteries) I decided to put it on anyways. There is not a whole lot on info around about this weapon, due to the fact it isn't out yet. Although, from the picture on the left, it looks like something out of the 80s. (Note the two charging handles, one for the rifle, one for the grenade launcher).

The OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon) is a very ambitious project of the US military that should enter service circa 2009. Initially Two teams were selected to make prototypes, but in 2000, one team, lead by Alliant Techsystems Inc., won the contract for further development. This team also consisted of Heckler Und Koch, Dynamic Nobel, and some other companies.

The Key idea behind the OICW programme is to increase effectiveness of the soldier and their kill probability. To achieve this, the OICW had three major components; the Kinetic Energy (KE) module, which is, in fact, modified Heckler und Koch G36 Assault rifle, High Explosive (HE) module, which is a semi-auto, magazine fed 20mm grenade launcher, and a computerized day-night sighting system with an integrated laser rangefineder and fire control unit. The system is advertized as being (or going to be) 5 times more lethal than the M16A2/M203 combo.
The design of the KE module has nothing new behind it. The only one unusual thing is a set of buttons on the left side of the pistol grip. These buttons control the fire control system, and the laser range finder, as well as selection of the fire mode (KE of HE).
The HE module fires 20mm high-velocity grenades. These grenades have programmable fuses, that can be set for Air Burst mode (grenade explodes at the specified range above the target, range is set via Fire Control Module from the laser range finder) this can be used to counter any little buggers in a trench. There is also a Point Detonation (Grenade explodes on impact).

For obvious reasons, the KE module can be separated from the HE/Fire Control modules and used as a typical addault rifle with iron sights, but without buttstock. The seperated HE module is completely useless since it uses the KE module trigger to operate.
