When most people hear "SAS Selection" they think of long walks in the Brecon beacons. This isn't the case. The long marches are only a protion of the battle. There are different stages of selection. There is the initial Marching, carrying rucksacks and everything. Then comes continuation training. This consist of the Fieldcraft Techniques course, this part teaches all the movements and SOPs of the four man patrols. Next comes Combat and survival training which teaches all the knowledge a soldier needs when in hostile territory - building shelters, finding food, finding water, catching small game, and so forth. The Combat and survival course ends in the famous week long "Escape and Evasion" course. Next comes "Jungle Training Programme" in Brunei. Last comes the "Static-line Parachute Training programme" Which is based in RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. When all these courses are finished, the passing troopers are "Badged" with the Sandy-coloured SAS Berets, and the Winged Dagger cap badges. |
